No. 15 Women’s Volleyball Battles Emerson for Three-Set Victory

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The No. 15 MIT women's volleyball team battled Emerson College for a 25-20, 25-23, 25-17 NEWMAC victory on Tuesday night in Rockwell Cage. Eileen Sadati powered the Engineers with a match-high 17 kills while hitting .400 as Chloe Hokenson tallied 13 assists, eight kills, five digs, and two blocks for the Lions.

THE BASICS:
  • Score: No. 15 MIT 3, Emerson 0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-17)
  • Records: No. 15 MIT (15-3 Overall, 6-0 NEWMAC); Emerson (11-9 Overall, 3-3 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Set 1: A hitting error gave Emerson a 7-4 lead and it maintained a small cushion until a kill by Sadati and a hitting error by the Lions put MIT in front, 15-14. Hokenson quickly evened the score courtesy of a kill, but a four-point burst that featured back-to-back kills by Ali Gibbs created some breathing room for the Engineers. Emerson managed to cut its deficit in half on four occasions, the last at 22-20 on a serving error. MIT went on to claim the next three points as kill by Sadati clinched the win.
  • Set 2: An ace by Sami Kim knotted the frame at 16, however, a kill from Ella Zhou kicked off a string of five unanswered points. The Lions countered with a 6-1 run that included three consecutive blocks, all of which resulted in block assists for Hannah Miller, and tied the set at 22-22. Sadati stopped the run with a kill, but it was matched by one from Rachel Dickerson. The Engineers thwarted the comeback attempt with kills by Sadati and Gibbs to secure the 25-23 victory.
  • Set 3: MIT jumped out to a 6-1 lead and then put together a 7-3 run that resulted in a 17-10 advantage. Despite the deficit Emerson continued to attack as a Hokenson ace narrowed the gap to 18-16. The Engineers replied with a 7-1 match-ending run with the final two points being kills by Zhou.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Zhou finished with 14 kills, 10 digs, and two aces while Gibbs added nine kills.
