Field Hockey Falls to WPI, 1-0, in Double Overtime

WORCESTER, Mass. – WPI's Arie Lang produced the lone goal in a 1-0 double overtime victory against MIT in a NEWMAC field hockey game on Tuesday night.
 
THE BASICS:
  • Score: WPI 1, MIT 0 (2OT)
  • Records: MIT (9-6 Overall, 5-2 NEWMAC); WPI (11-4 Overall, 6-1 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • WPI had the upper hand in the first half as it led the way in shots (6-2), shots on goal (3-1), and penalty corners (6-1).
  • MIT controlled the action in the second half as it had advantages in shots (14-3), shots on goal (8-1), and penalty corners (11-2). During the final 2:17 of regulation, the visiting Engineers generated six penalty corners and six shots, five of which were on goal, but they could not break through.
  • During the first overtime period, Maeve Zimmer made two saves and cleared out a dangerous ball that bounced off the front of the post and back into play. Bailey McIntyre quickly countered with a shot of her own, but Mayles Lakin came up with the save.
  • In the second extra session, a long ball by Sanidi Waduthanthiri was collected by Abbey Powers on the near side and Powers sent a pass across the circle to Lang who redirected it back to the near post with 6:15 on the clock.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Zimmer ended the night with six saves while Lakin had 10 for the hosts.
