Men's Soccer Sees Late Comeback Fall Short Against Clark as Cougars Take the 3-2 Win

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The MIT men's soccer team saw a late comeback attempt fall just short as the Engineers dropped a 3-2 NEWMAC contest to Clark on Wednesday night on Roberts Field.  
 
THE BASICS: 

  • Score: Clark 3, MIT 2 
  • Records: MIT (3-8-4 Overall, 1-4-1 NEWMAC), Clark (5-8-2, 1-4-1 NEWMAC) 

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • Off a set piece the near side from Carter Benoff, Ben Siegel got his head on the ball and redirected it into the goal at 8:17 to give Clark the lead. 
  • Shikhar Motupally had two scoring chances, but his first shot was blocked, and his second attempt was saved by Diego Marin. 
  • Clark quickly scored to open the second half as Myles Nelson-Atkins sent in an off-angle cross from the corner of the to Luke Sheldon who snuck the ball into the goal at 46:54.  
  • Dilin Meloni looked to get MIT to within one in the 35th minute off a free kick, but Marin made a diving save to keep the clean sheet for Clark. 
  • Jesse Hedequist made it a 2-1 match with his shot from outside the box that found the back of the net at 65:03.  
  • Nelson-Atkins got Clark back ahead by two as he snuck through the Engineer defense and put the finishing touch on the score at 67:45 to give the Cougars a 3-1 advantage.  
  • Gianluca Balestrieri collected a loose ball in front with under two minutes left and put his shot into the goal to bring MIT to within one, but the Engineers could not find the tying goal in the game's waning minutes.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Hedequist scored his second goal of the season while Balestrieri got his fourth. 
  • The Engineers held an 16-11 advantage in shots, however, the Cougars held an 8-6 advantage in shots on target. MIT also earned eight corners. 
  • Hernando Ardila made five saves in net.  

UP NEXT: 

  • The Engineers head to Salve Regina on Saturday, October 25 for a 2:00 PM match. The Cougars will host Springfield for an 11:00 AM contest.
