Men's Soccer Holds off Springfield for 5-3 NEWMAC Win

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The MIT men's soccer team earned a thrilling 5-3 victory over NEWMAC foe Springfield on Saturday afternoon on Roberts Field. The Pride tied the match on two occasions, but both times the Engineers responded quickly as they held on for the key victory. 
 
THE BASICS: 

  • Score: MIT 5, Springfield 3 
  • Records: MIT (3-5-3 Overall, 1-1-1 NEWMAC), Springfield (5-5-0 Overall, 1-1-1 NEWMAC) 

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • With time winding down in the opening half, the ball deflected off a Pride defender to Shikhar Motupally who put the ball past Noah Pote for the goal at 42:12. 
  • The Pride pulled even early in the second half when Tommy Quiterio got a deflection in front of the goal and converted the score at 46:23. 
  • Just a few minutes later at 48:15, Woods Windham sent a pass to Kaleb Asfaw on the far side of the field where Asfaw was able to fire a shot into the net to regain the lead for MIT. 
  • Springfield was yet again quick to answer as Quiterio scored his second of the day at 53:17 off a free kick. 
  • A flurry of shots in front of the Pride goal led to the third Engineer goal as Jesse Hedequist got a rebound and put the ball into the goal at 73:51. Just over three minutes later Gianluca Balestrieri gave MIT its first multi-goal lead of the game as a set piece spearheaded by Moutpally found Balestrieri for the header goal at 76:59. 
  • Yet again the Pride pulled to within one with a penalty kick goal from Parker Thornton at 79:06. 
  • Chase Carroll added a goal with three seconds remaining to seal the 5-3 win.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • Motupally scored his fourth goal of the season while Asfaw, Hedequist, Balestrieri, and Carroll all scored their first goals of the season. 
  • Balestrieri, Hedequist, and Carroll recorded their first collegiate goals. 
  • Paolo Mangiafico earned the win making three saves as he improved to 3-4-2. Pote made eight saves and fell to 5-5-0.  

UP NEXT: 

  • MIT returns to the pitch on Monday, October 6 with the resumption of the Gordan match on Roberts Field. The Pride return to play on Tuesday, October 7 for a road contest at Worcester St. at 7:00 PM.
