CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Two goals in the third quarter helped propel MIT to a 4-0 victory over Wellesley College in a NEWMAC field hockey game on Saturday.
Janie Thomas produced two goals while
Meredith Wu earned two assists for the Engineers.
Prior to the game, MIT honored its graduating class of
Marisa Montione,
Bailey McIntyre, and
Shealy Callahan.
THE BASICS:
- Score: MIT 4, Wellesley 0
- Records: MIT (11-7 Overall, 7-2 NEWMAC); Wellesley (6-12 Overall; 3-6 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- MIT controlled the action in the opening quarter with a 7-1 margin in penalty corners and a 7-0 advantage in shots, two of which were saved by Hannah Simmonds. However, the game remained scoreless until 37 seconds remained in the second quarter. During a penalty corner, Audrey Oh deflected a blast from McIntyre that was set up by Wu.
- Wellesley threatened to tie the game early in the third quarter, however, a shot by Claudia Summers was blocked. A few minutes later, Simmonds dove towards the far post, cutting off the angle and making a save on a shot by Wu.
- The Engineers responded with a pair of quick goals to extend their lead to 3-0. In the 42nd minute, Hussar connected on a feed from Wu during a penalty corner. Thomas then found the back of the cage when she knocked in the rebound of a saved shot in the 44th minute.
- Thomas capped the scoring 3:45 into the fourth quarter when she redirected a feed from Callahan.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Maeve Zimmer and Alexia Ninios were not forced to make a save for MIT.
- Simmonds collected eight saves in 45 minutes of action while Katelyn Hart closed out the game for the Blue. Sebastian Limkakeng bolstered the backline with a defensive save.
- The Engineers led the way in shots (18-2), shots on goal (13-0), and penalty corners (14-2).
UP NEXT:
- MIT is the No. 3 seed in the NEWMAC Field Hockey Championship and it will host No. 6 Wellesley in the first round on Tuesday, November 4 at 6:00 PM.
- This will be the ninth postseason meeting between both teams and the first since 2021 when the Engineers defeated the Blue, 4-0, in the semifinals.
