No. 8 Women's Soccer Scores Three Early First Half Goals To Defeat Emmanuel 3-0 and Advance to NCAA Second Round

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The No. 8 MIT women's soccer team scored three times in the first 16 minutes of play to secure a 3-0 win over Emmanuel in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. 

Natalie Barnouw scored the first two goals for the Engineers, to set a new program record with 22 goals in the season and gives her the career points record with 142.

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • Just 47 seconds into the match, Natalie Barnouw corralled a loose ball and put the ball into the corner of the goal to give the Engineers a 1-0 lead. 
  • Barnouw got her second of the day just over five minutes later as she got a pass from Madeline Seebeck for a score at 6:22. 
  • JoJo Miller headed in the third MIT goal off a corner kick from Leena Mehendale at 16:13 to make it a 3-0 MIT advantage.  
  • The Saints outshout the Engineers 10-3 in the second half looking to get on the board however Maddy Noll made four saves in the half to secure the shutout win for MIT. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • Barnouw has 54 career goals which are two off the program record and her 57 points this season are tops in Division III and she ranks third in goals.  
  • Barnouw has scored two goals in three-straight contests.  
  • Miller scored her second goal of the season. 
  • Mehendale tallied her fifth assist while Seebeck got her third. 
  • Ava Muffoletto played the first half with one save to improve to 18-0.Noll made four saves in her 45 minutes of action in the second half. 
  • Teigan Robie made five saves for Emmanuel.  

UP NEXT: 

  • MIT will play Colby, Sunday November 16 at 1:00 PM in a rematch of last year's second round game which saw the Mules come away with a 2-0 win. The winner of the match will head to next weekend's NCAA Sectionals.
