No. 8 Women's Soccer Falls to No. 1 WashU in NCAA Tournament Round of 16

Grantham, Pa. - The No. 8 MIT women's soccer team saw a late rally fall short as the Engineers' season came to an end against top-ranked and defending national champion Washington University in St. Louis in the NCAA Tournament Round of 16 by a 1-0 score at Shoemaker Field on the campus of Messiah University.
 
THE BASICS: 

  • Score: WashU 1, MIT 0 
  • Records: No. 8 MIT (22-3-1 Overall), No. 1 WashU (19-0-2) 

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • MIT had a few early chances from Alice Vranka and JoJo Miller, but both chances were turned away by Kassidy Lanthier. 
  • The Bears had their best scoring chance from Oliva Clemons who pulled Ava Muffoletto out of the goal to get herself a wide-open net, however her shot sailed high. 
  • Ella Koleno sent a pass through the Engineer defense in front of the six-yard mark where Cami Colpitts fired a shot into the corner of the net in the 55th minute to break the scoreless tie.   
  • Arianna Doss got the ball right in front of the goal with just over 10 minutes left, but her shot was blocked by the Bears defender. Lauren Won had a great opportunity at the back post for a header goal, but her shot went wide of the net at 85:12. 
  • Maddy Noll made a leaping save on a Clemons shot with just under five minutes remaining to keep the Bears at one goal.  
  • The Engineers were unable to get the ball back into the Bears end for a goal as the defending national champions took the 1-0 win to advance to the fourth round of the NCAA Tournament.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • The Engineers end the season tied for the most wins in program history.  
  • Muffoletto made two saves in the first half while Noll took the loss having made five saves in the second half. Muffoleto concludes the season with a 19-0 record while Noll falls to 3-3-1. 
  • WashU outshot the Engineers 15-8 and put eight shots on target to MIT's four.  
  • MIT earned five corner kicks while the Bears took two.  
  • Colpitts scored her eighth goal of the season while Koleno dished out her 11th assist of the season.
