No. 13 Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Clark, Captures NEWMAC Regular Season Title

WORCESTER, Mass. – No. 13 MIT wrapped up the regular season by defeating NEWMAC foe Clark University, 25-10, 25-14, 25-14, on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Engineers claimed their third NEWMAC regular season title in four years and earned the No. 1 seed for the upcoming NEWMAC Women's Volleyball Championship.
 
THE BASICS:
  • Score: No. 13 MIT 3, Clark 0 (25-10, 25-14, 25-14)
  • Records: No. 13 MIT (24-3 Overall, 11-0 NEWMAC); Clark (1-24 Overall, 0-11 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Set 1: MIT raced out to a 6-0 lead after an ace by Daphne Gavros and then won the set, 25-10, on a block by Ali Gibbs and Jessie Trapp.
  • Set 2: The Engineers gradually built a 12-6 lead following an ace by Adelyn Wyndham. Clark remained within striking distance as a hitting error narrowed the gap to 17-12. MIT responded with a 7-1 run that was capped with a kill from Maya Licznerski. A block extended the frame for the Cougars, however, a kill by Gibbs secured the 25-14 victory.
  • Set 3: A kill by Trapp sparked a 12-3 run that resulted in a 14-5 advantage. The Engineers maintained a comfortable cushion as an ace from Jillian Amaro clinched the 25-14 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Trapp led all players with nine kills and hit .636 while Eileen Sadati posted seven kills.
  • Ella Zhou and Claire Underwood both chipped in six kills as Zhou added six digs and two aces.
  • Amaro tallied 28 assists and 10 digs while Kayleigh May dished out 12 assists in the first set.
  • Gavros collected a team-high 11 digs as Wyndham generated seven of her own.
  • Gibbs bolstered the defense with a match-high four blocks.
UP NEXT:
  • MIT will be the No. 1 seed for the NEWMAC Championship and will host No. 8 Wellesley College in a first round match on Tuesday, November 11 at 6:00 PM.
  • This will be the first postseason meeting between both teams since the 2017 NEWMAC Championship which saw the Engineers defeat the Blue, 25-23, 25-15, 25-21.
