NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – The MIT women's basketball team lost to No. 3 Smith College, 78-45, in a non-conference game on Wednesday night. April Chan led the way for the Engineers with 11 points and six rebounds.
 
THE BASICS:

• Score: No. 3 Smith 78, MIT 45
• Records: MIT (3-6 Overall); Smith (7-0 Overall)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

• Smith rattled off nine unanswered points to take an 11-4 lead with 4:01 left in the opening frame. Olivia Joseph buried a three pointer a minute later, however, the Bears outscored MIT, 9-2, which resulted in a 20-9 advantage at the end of the quarter.
• A trey from Rachael Zacks and then a jumper by Chan brought the Engineers within six (20-14) at the 7:43 mark of the second quarter. Smith responded with 10 straight points, helping it pull away as it entered halftime with a 42-21 margin.
• The Bears maintained their comfortable advantage in the second half en route to the victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

• Riley O'Sullivan produced eight points and four rebounds while Ruth Lanouette registered eight points and five assists.
