Women’s Basketball Defeats Wheaton, 67-56

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – MIT drained 23 free throws and generated 27 points off turnovers, helping it defeat Wheaton College, 67-56, in a NEWMAC women's basketball game on Wednesday night. Junior Alice Hall (Ambler, Pa.) powered the Engineers with a career-high 16 points, nine rebounds, and four steals while junior Kiki Walters (Fleetwood, Pa.) led the Lyons with 14 points, 11 rebounds, and six assists.

THE BASICS:
  • Score: MIT 67, Wheaton 56
  • Records: MIT (11-13 Overall, 7-3 NEWMAC); Wheaton (7-17 Overall, 3-7 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • A three pointer by senior Greta Minos (Boston, Mass.) gave Wheaton a 16-13 edge with 35 seconds left in the first quarter. However, Hall drained a free throw 10 seconds later, kicking off a 10-0 run that was capped by senior Elise Harvey's (Wayland, Mass.) jumper at the 7:20 mark of the second quarter.
  • A layup by junior Madeline Duwe (Greenville, S.C.) and a trey from sophomore Cheyenne Colbert (Brookline, N.H.) quickly brought the Lyons within 23-21, but the Engineers put together an 11-2 run to create some breathing room. Minos knocked down a three pointer late in the frame, making the score 34-26 at halftime.
  • Wheaton stayed close in the third quarter as a jumper by Walters narrowed the gap to 42-41 with 5:05 on the clock. Sparked by a turnaround jumper from junior Brianna Lebrun (Hartford, Conn.), MIT generated a 9-1 burst during the second half of the period.
  • The Engineers maintained their small cushion until baskets by Colbert and Walters trimmed the deficit to 58-52 with 2:40 left to play. Lebrun drained two free throws during MIT's next possession while Walters immediately followed with two of her own.
  • A layup by Hall moved the score to 62-54 at the 1:47 mark, but Walters sank two more shots at the charity stripe 17 seconds later. This was as close as it would get as a jumper by sophomore Kaitlin Tam (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) with 1:09 left helped put the game out of reach as the Engineers sank three of their next four free throws to secure the victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Lebrun totaled 15 points off the bench while junior Kaya Weiser (Villanova, Pa.) posted 10 points, three steals, and two assists. Senior Sarah Berman (York, Pa.) chipped in nine rebounds, with eight coming off the defensive glass, and two assists.
  • Sophomore Mary McClintock (Essex Junction, Vt.) produced 12 points as Colbert finished with 11 points and seven rebounds.
UP NEXT:
  • Both teams will wrap up the regular season with home games on Saturday, February 22. MIT will host Salve Regina University at 2:00 PM while Wheaton will play WPI at 1:00 PM.
