Men’s Lacrosse Defeats Roger Williams, 13-4, in Season Opener

BRISTOL, R.I. – MIT recorded a pair of goals nine seconds apart in the opening minutes and never looked back as it went on to defeat Roger Williams University, 13-4, in a non-conference men's lacrosse game on Saturday afternoon. Junior Garrett Campagna (Lancaster, Pa.) powered the Engineers with one goal and three assists.

THE BASICS:
  • Score: MIT 13, Roger Williams 4
  • Records: MIT (1-0 Overall); Roger Williams (0-3 Overall)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Junior Zach Bleil (New Canaan, Conn.) put MIT on the board after 1:19 expired and then graduate student Andrew Palleiko (Hopkinton, Mass.) won the ensuing faceoff and found the back net nine seconds later. The Engineers' lead grew to 3-0 after Campagna redirected a feed from Bleil midway through the quarter.
  • Roger Williams ended the shutout at the 4:45 mark with a man-up goal but MIT replied with senior Nick Stiles (New Canaan, Conn.) connecting on a pass from junior CJ Sanchez (New Rochelle, N.Y.) in a span of 37 seconds.
  • The score remained unchanged until the Engineers generated three goals during the last 5:38 of the second quarter, building a 7-1 advantage at halftime. Stiles accounted for one goal and one assist during the burst.
  • MIT continued to control the action as a blast by junior Bryce Metalios (Old Greenwich, Conn.) that was set up by senior Dylan Nelson (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.) increased the lead to 11-2 with 31 seconds remaining. The Hawks countered with a goal with three seconds on the clock.
  • The fourth quarter was a defensive battle until Sanchez broke through with a solo effort at the 5:44 mark. Roger Williams found the back of the net just over a minute later, but Nelson capped the scoring with 1:44 left to play.
