No. 11 Women’s Tennis Tops No. 31 Vassar, 6-1

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The No. 11 MIT women's tennis team defeated No. 31 Vassar College, 6-1, in non-conference action on Saturday in the J.B. Carr Tennis Bubble.
 
THE BASICS:

HOW IT HAPPENED - DOUBLES:
  • Juniors Alaina Kolli (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) and Artemis Pados (Delray Beach, Fla.) rattled off five straight wins to defeat junior Erin McCusker (Norton, Mass.) and sophomore Madison Kirby (Davidson, N.C.), 6-1, in the top spot.
  • In a back-and-forth battle in the No. 3 position, sophomores Anastasia Samets (Ocean, N.J.) and Saina Deshpande (Pune, India) claimed the last three games to secure the 6-4 victory over junior Ananya Krishnan (Chesterbrook, Pa.) and senior Elyse Duley (Charlotte, N.C.).
  • In another tight match, first-year Chloe Zeng (Austin, Texas) and senior Jay Lu (Austin, Texas) emerged with a 7-5 win over seniors Macey Dowd (Orinda, Calif.) and Sofie Shen (New York, N.Y.) in the No. 2 slot.
HOW IT HAPPENED - SINGLES:
  • Vassar tied the match at 1-1 when junior Iris Li (Palo Alto, Calif.) defeated Zeng, 6-2, 6-1, in the No. 2 spot.
  • Kolli put MIT ahead courtesy of a 6-4, 6-2 victory over first-year Sieun Lee (Wake Forest, N.C.) in the No. 4 position.
  • In the No. 3 slot, Lu fought off Dowd in the second set to capture a 6-1, 6-4 win and give the Engineers a 3-1 lead.
  • Trailing 3-0 in the first-set tiebreak, first-year Fiona Lee (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) won seven consecutive points to secure the come from behind victory. She went on to defeat McCusker, 6-2, in the second set, clinching the match from the top spot.
  • Deshpande overpowered Kirby, 6-0, 6-0, in the No. 5 position.
  • Samets defeated Shen, 6-1, in the first set and then won four straight games to record a 6-3 victory in the No. 6 slot.
