Lu Breaks Program Wins Record as No. 12 Women’s Tennis Falls to No. 10 Trinity, 4-3

Box Score SAN ANTONIO, Texas – In the first meeting between both programs, which saw four singles matches go to three sets, No. 10 Trinity University emerged with a 4-3 win over the No. 12 MIT women's tennis team on Friday. With her victory in No. 2 doubles, senior Jay Lu (Austin, Texas) broke the program's career wins record as she eclipsed the mark of 147 which was set by Elysa Kohrs '18.

  • Records: No. 12 MIT (2-1 Overall); No. 10 Trinity (11-1 Overall)
HOW IT HAPPENED - DOUBLES:
  • After trading games to open the match, Lu and first-year Chloe Zeng (Austin, Texas) generated five straight victories to secure a 6-1 decision over senior Olivia Kim (Phoenix, Ariz.) and graduate student Ellie Hughes (Austin, Texas) in the No. 2 position.
  • Juniors Alaina Kolli (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) and Artemis Pados (Delray Beach, Fla.) quickly built a 5-1 advantage in the top spot, but sophomore Rosabella Andrade (Southlake, Texas) and junior Trinity Levy (Camarillo, Calif.) picked up the next two games. MIT thwarted the comeback attempt by claiming the next game for a 6-3 victory as the duo captured the doubles point.
  • In the No. 3 slot, Kim and first-year Lauren Tin (Austin, Texas) established a 4-1 lead, but sophomores Anastasia Samets (Ocean, N.J.) and Saina Deshpande (Pune, India) produced back-to-back victories. It would not be enough as the Trinity won the next game, notching a 6-2 score.
HOW IT HAPPENED - SINGLES:
  • Deshpande gave the Engineers a 2-0 lead after she defeated first-year Lucy Nabedrick (Plymouth, Minn.), 6-3, 6-1, in the No. 4 position.
  • In the top spot, Zeng fell to senior Ruth Hill (Abilene, Texas), 6-4, 6-3.
  • The Tigers tied the match at 2-2 as Hughes battled Kolli for a 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 win in the No. 3 slot.
  • Lu rattled off three straight victories in the third set to come back and defeat Kim, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, in the No. 2 position.
  • Samets pushed the first set of her No. 5 singles match to a tiebreak, which she won, 7-3. However, Levy claimed the next two sets, 6-3 and 6-1, for the victory.
  • In the No. 6 spot, Andrade captured the first set, 6-4, but Pados won the last two games of her 6-4 second set win to force a decisive third set. Trailing 5-3, Pados tied the frame at 5-5, however, Andrade won the next two games to clinch the match.
