NEW LONDON, Conn. --Â Junior
Merlin Gogolin (New York, N.Y.) scored a career-high 31 points and pulled down seven rebounds, but the MIT men's basketball team fell to the United States Coast Guard Academy, 84-68, in NEWMAC play on Saturday afternoon at Rolan Gymnasium.Â
Senior Ben Yagey (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) scored 20 points and junior Luke Farrell (Ortley Beach, N.J.) added 18 points to help Coast Guard snap a six-game losing streak with the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Gogolin scored eight of MIT's first ten points in the contest to give the Engineers an early 10-7 lead at 15:20.
- MIT continued to lead until the 12:43 mark when Yagey made a pair of free throws to put Coast Guard ahead, 13-12.The Bears never trailed for the remainder of the contest.
- With the Bears leading 17-12, MIT sophomore Isaac Dobie (Kitty Hawk, N.C.) hit a three-pointer to pull MIT back within two, 17-15, at 11:06.
- Coast Guard countered with a 14-2 run to take a 31-17 lead at 7:43. The Bears would lead by as many as 16 points late in the first half before taking a 15-point margin into halftime, 50-35.
- Coast Guard held a double-digit lead throughout the second half, extending the advantage to 26 points just past the midway point when Yagey made the score 76-50 with a layup at 9:05 of the second half.
- MIT worked the deficit down to 15 points, 82-67, thanks to a Gogolin layup with 2:04 remaining but Coast Guard would go on to close out the game, 84-68.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Gogolin finished 13-for-22 from the floor for MIT.
- Dobie added 11 points and eight rebounds for MIT, his 13th double digit scoring game of the season.
- Sophomore Mike Ewing (Mendham, N.J.) added 11 points off the MIT bench, finishing 2-for-2 from beyond the arc and 5-for-6 from the free throw line.Â
- Coast Guard saw four players finish in double figures, as senior Declan Rooney (Seattle, Wash.) added 14 points and junior Trevor Parks (Oldsmar, Fla.) dropped in 10 points off the bench.
- The Bears bench outscored MIT, 24-13. Coast Guard also had the advantage in points off turnovers, 28-16, and points in the paint, 46-32.

- Both teams continue NEWMAC play on Wednesday, February 12. MIT returns home to host Emerson at 7:00 PM. Coast Guard will travel to Springfield for a 7:30 PM contest.
