THE BASICS:
- Score: MIT 88, Coast Guard 79
- Records: MIT (10-11 Overall, 6-1 NEWMAC); Coast Guard (14-7 Overall, 3-4 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- MIT scored the first 10 points of the game before going up 20-5 on a layup by Choi with 3:04 on the clock. Coast Guard responded with seven straight points as senior Glory Blethen (Boothbay, Maine) accounted for the first five. An exchange of baskets followed with a free throw by junior Brianna Lebrun (Hartford, Conn.) increasing the Engineers' lead to 23-14 at the end of the frame.
- Stotts drained two free throws to open the second stanza. However, a free throw by senior Elise Harvey (Wayland, Mass.) and then a layup by Choi returned the double-digit advantage which grew to 16 (45-29) with 50 seconds remaining. Stotts replied with a layup during the Bears' ensuing possession for the final basket of the quarter.
- The Engineers maintained a comfortable cushion for most of the third quarter, but Coast Guard chipped away at the deficit as a three pointer by Stotts brought the visitors within 70-64 with 28 seconds left. MIT quickly responded with a layup by Choi right before time expired.
- A Blethen jumper once again narrowed the gap to six points, however, a three-point play by Nwogu kicked off a 9-2 run that moved the score to 81-68 midway through the fourth quarter.
- Two free throws by senior Julia Mann (Central Square, N.Y.) ended Coast Guard's scoring drought at the 4:59 mark. However, the Bears would not get any closer until first-year Olivia Wright (Midlothian, Va.) knocked down a three pointer with four seconds left to play.
