BRIGHTON, Mass. - The MIT softball team opened its season outscoring Simmons 22-10 as the Engineers earned a doubleheader sweep over the Sharks on Wednesday afternoon at the Daly Field Athletic Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE:
- MIT grabbed the lead two batters into the game on a solo shot to left by sophomore Nicole Johnston (St. Charles, Ill.).
- The Engineers tacked on three more runs in the second inning. Senior Mackenzie Bivin (San Diego, Calif.) singled home junior Olivia Scarpaci (Staten Island, N.Y.) to make it 2-0. Bivin and Layla Thiessen (Carlsbad, Calif.) then scored on a pass ball and error to make it 4-0.
- Simmons responded with three runs in the bottom of the second. A triple from junior Emery Kreidel-Reimer (North Bend, Wash.) scored two, and she came around to score on a groundout.
- The Engineers scored the next six runs, capped by a three-run homer by senior Mikayla Cable (Valrico, Fla.) to make it 10-3.
- The Sharks got three runs in the sixth to cut the lead to four, but MIT tacked on two insurance runs in the seventh for the final 12-6 score.
HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO:
- Simmons in each of the first two innings to take a 2-0 lead.
- MIT responded, scoring two runs in the third and fourth innings. Junior Ava Ladd (Austin, Texas) scored on a fielding error in the third to give the Engineers the lead and Thiessen tripled home Bivin to put MIT up by two.
- Zoe Soule (Farmingdale, Maine) homered in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game, but MIT scored six unanswered runs for the 10-4 win. Senior Kennedy Adkison (San Jose, Calif.) knocked in the game winning run with her RBI single in the top of the fifth.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Junior Caroline Langmeyer (Upper Arlington, Ohio) got the win in game one, going all seven innings with seven strikeouts.
- Cable's homer gives her six in her career, to tie her for seventh in program history. She finished the day with four RBI.
- Sophomore Arianna Kumar (San Diego, Calif.) collected four hits over the two games. Thiessen went 2-5 with three runs scored form the leadoff spot in game one and collected another hit and RBI in game two
- First year Delaney Benevides (Plainville, Mass.) went 2-4 with an RBI in game two.
- First year Sarah Blackett (St Petersburg, Fla.) tossed five innings in game two with seven strikeouts. Junior Nicole Doering (St. Louis Park, Minn.) got the win with two innings of three-hit ball.
UP NEXT:
- The Engineers head to Salisbury, Md. for the Margie Knight Softball Classic from Saturday, March 15-Sunday, March 16. MIT will open with an 11:00 AM game against the host Gulls followed by a 3:00 PM game against NYU. The Sharks will host Rhode Island College in a doubleheader on March 15 beginning at 1:00 PM.
