Softball Walks Off NYU, 5-4 in Extras, Falls to No. 13 Salisbury

SALISBURY, Md. - The MIT softball team split its two games at the Margie Knight Softball Classic, hosted by Salisbury on Saturday afternoon. The Engineers opened the day dropping an 11-1 game to the No. 13 Gulls but rebounded for a come-from-behind win in extras, 5-4, over NYU in the second game of the day.  

THE BASICS: 

  • Scores: 
    • No. 13 Salisbury 11, MIT 1 (6 Innings) 
    • MIT 5, NYU 4 (8 Innings) 
  • Records: MIT (3-1 Overall), Salisbury (10-1 Overall), NYU (4-6 Overall) 

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE vs. NO. 13 SALISBURY: 

  • Salisbury scored five total runs in the third and fourth innings. Ellen Stockman (Brunswick, Md.) knocked in three runs for the hosts.  
  • Junior Olivia Scarpaci (Staten Island, N.Y.) got MIT on the board in the fifth, taking home on a throwing error.  
  • Sophomore Arianna Kumar (San Diego, Calif.) and junior Ava Ladd (Austin, Texas) hit back-to-back singles in the sixth with one out, but Salisbury got out of the inning without allowing either to score. 
  • The Gulls put the game away with a six-run sixth as a grand slam from Emily Stickman (Brunswick, Md.) ended the game. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • First year Layla Thiessen (Carlsbad, Calif.) led MIT with two hits in the game. 
  • Sophomore Caroline Langmeyer (Upper Arlington, Ohio) went the first four, scattering five hits with three runs, three walks and a strikeout. 
  • Sydney Adolfson got the win for the Gulls as she tossed a complete game allowing no earned runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks. 
  • Ellen Stockman went 3-4 with three RBI while Emily Stockman finished the day 2-4 with five RBI. 

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO vs. NYU: 

  • NYU pulled out to a 3-0 lead after four innings of play.  
  • First year Delaney Benevides (Plainville, Mass.) singled home the first MIT run of the game in the fourth and came around to score the second run on a double steal.  
  • The Violets made it 4-2 on a wild pitch in the sixth. 
  • MIT tied the game in the bottom of the seventh. Senior Mikayla Cable (Valrico, Fla.) led off the inning with a bunt single and went to second on a hit from Kumar. An error on a ball off the bat of senior Kennedy Adkison (San Jose, Calif.) scored Cable, and a sacrifice fly from senior Mackenzie Bivin (San Diego, Calif.) sent the game into extra innings. 
  • NYU had the bases loaded with no outs in the eighth, but sophomore Sharona Huang (Duluth, Ga.) and the Engineers got the next three outs to keep the game tied. 
  • With the bases loaded and no outs, Thiessen singled home Scarpaci to give MIT the win.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • Huang got the win for MIT with five innings of five-hit ball. She allowed three runs (one earned) with one walk and one strikeout.  
  • Thiessen went 3-5 at the plate with an RBI. Benevides also collected three hits, finishing 3-3 with an RBI. 
  • Kumar, Adkison and first Maggie Feng (Brookfield, Wis.) collected two hits each. 
  • Siena Kiefer (Seattle, Wash.) and Naya Schubel (Fairless Hills, Pa.) had two hits each for NYU.  

UP NEXT: 

  • MIT continues play at Margie Knight Softball Classic, tomorrow, Sunday, March 16. The Engineers will play Susquehanna at 11:00 AM followed by Muhlenburg at 1:00 PM.
