Men's Volleyball Secures Wins Over Arcadia and Rivier

CAMBRIDGE Mass. - The MIT men's volleyball team cruised to two victories over Arcadia and Rivier on Saturday at Rockwell Cage.  

THE BASICS:  

  • Scores:  
    • MIT 3, Arcadia 0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-22) 
    • MIT 3, Rivier 1 (25-16, 25-16, 25-27, 25-19) 
  • Records: MIT (12-11 Overall), Arcadia (8-14 Overall), Rivier (6-10 Overall)  

HOW IT HAPPENED vs. ARCADIA 

  • Set 1: After Arcadia recorded the first point of the set, the Engineers rattled off the next five to take the lead which they would not relinquish for the rest of the set. Arcadia pulled to within one off an MIT attacking error which made it 20-19, but the Engineers scored five of the next seven points with a kill from Grant Oh (Irvine, Calif.) giving MIT the set win.  
  • Set 2: First year Maddox Brandenburg (Carlsblad, Calif.) put MIT up 10-5, but Arcadia chipped away with three-straight MIT errors making it a 16-14. A 5-1 run gave the Engineers a 21-15 advantage with an ace from Jensen Fiskin (Palm Desert, Calif.) and kill from Oh giving MIT the set.  
  • Set 3: With MIT holding a 3-1 lead, Arcadia ripped off five-straight points to go up 6-3. The Engineers hung around and eventually pulled ahead off a 3-0 run that gave them a 13-12 lead. The teams remained close for the remainder of the set before a kill from first year Hansen Fan (Center Valley, Pa.) clinched the win for the home team.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:  

  • Oh posted a match-high 11 kills. First year Warren Nam (Glendale, Calif.) led the way with 19 assists and seven digs. Fiskin collected 18 assists and seven kills. 
  • Brandenburg finished with 10 kills. Junior Michael Rini (Huntington Beach, Calif.) contributed five blocks.  

HOW IT HAPPENED vs. RIVIER 

  • Set 1: The Raiders took an early 6-3 lead before back-to-back errors tied the match at six. The teams went back-and-forth before a 4-0 spurt gave MIT a 13-10 lead. The Engineers began to pull away as a kill from first year Kristof Spellen (New Rochell, N.Y.) secured the 25-16 win.   
  • Set 2: The visitors once again took an early lead, but once again MIT rallied back eventually taking a 19-13 lead off a Spellen kill. Graduate student Aleks Markovski (Pleven, Bulgaria) secured the second set win with his first kill of the match.  
  • Set 3: Back-to-back aces from Oh put the Engineers up 16-11. The Raiders chipped away, eventually pulling to within one at 20-19. Back-to-back errors from the Engineers gave Rivier a 24-23 lead, but MIT held off set points and the teams exchanged points until a kill from Aidan Combs (Weare, N.H.) gave the Raiders the set.  
  • Set 4: The teams stayed close throughout the early portions of the set until a 5-0 run which featured two aces from Oh and was punctuated by a Rini gave MIT a 22-16 lead and an ace from Fan sealed match point.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:  

  • Oh led the way with 18 kills followed by Spellen with a career-best 14. Fiskin collected 25 assists and Nam dished out 21.  

UP NEXT: 

  • The Engineers will travel to Wentworth on Friday, March 21 for a 6:00 PM match.
