SALISBURY, Md. - The MIT softball team earned a 4-0 shutout over Susquehanna to open the day but dropped a tough 1-0 decision to Muhlenberg on a walk-off to conclude the Margie Knight Softball Classic, hosted by Salisbury on Sunday afternoon.

THE BASICS:

  • Scores:
    • MIT 4, Susquehanna 0
    • Muhlenberg 1, MIT 0
  • Records: MIT (4-2 Overall), Susquehanna (2-9 Overall), Muhlenberg (9-4)

HOW IT HAPPENED - vs. SUSQUEHANNA:

  • Sophomore Arianna Kumar (San Diego, Calif.) broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run single to right to plate sophomore Nicole Johnston (St. Charles, Ill.) and first year Delaney Benevides (Plainville, Mass.).
  • Susquehanna had the bases loaded in the fourth and fifth innings, but starter Sarah Blackett (St. Petersburg, Fla.) was able to escape both innings without allowing a run to score.
  • First year Pearl Mitchell (Rockville, Md.) added an insurance run for MIT in the sixth with an RBI single to score senior Mackenzie Bivin (San Diego, Calif.) from second.
  • Blackett retired the Riverhawks in order in the seventh to lock up the shutout win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Blackett earned her first win with five innings of two-hit ball. She allowed no runs and struckout five. Sophomore Sharona Huang (Duluth, Ga.) finished the game and allowed two hits.
  • Bivin and Mitchell led the way with two hits apiece for the Engineers.

HOW IT HAPPENED - vs. MUHLENBERG:

  • The teams were locked in a scoreless tie until the bottom of the seventh.
  • The Engineers had multiple opportunities to pull ahead, leaving the bases loaded in both the second and third innings.
  • Senior Katie Katsuyama (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) held the Mules in check, allowing just one hit through six innings.
  • Juniors Olivia Scarpaci (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Ava Ladd (Austin, Texas) had back-to-back one out singles in the sixth, but were left stranded.
  • The Engineers got a runner on in the top of the seventh but could not get the run across the plate.
