CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Two goals during the last 5:35 of action created enough of a cushion as Union College held off No. 25 MIT, 12-8, in a non-conference women's lacrosse game on Saturday at Jack Barry Field. Junior
Annica Lam (Livingston, N.J.) recorded a hat trick for the Engineers while sophomore Gillian Joseph (Longmeadow, Mass.) amassed five goals, three assists, and five caused turnovers for the Garnet Chargers.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Junior Nina Petulla (Natick, Mass.) opened the scoring after 1:25 elapsed when she connected on a pass from junior Gwen Flusche (Ridgewood, N.J.). MIT increased its advantage just over a minute later courtesy of a player-down goal from Lam.
- Union responded with a 4-1 run that saw Joseph set up the first two goals and scoring the third which tied the game at 3-3 with 8:20 on the clock. The Garnet Chargers then took the lead on a solo effort by sophomore Hannah Compa (Rexford, N.Y.) late in the frame.
- The visitors created some breathing room following an unassisted marker by sophomore Maddy Schiller (Weston, Mass.) and a free-position goal by Joseph at the 7:03 mark of the second quarter.
- Lam narrowed the gap to 6-4 with 5:15 on the clock, but Schiller redirected a feed from junior Lana Mickelson (West Newbury, Mass.) with 59 seconds left before halftime.
- Compa and Joseph increased Union's lead to 9-4 during the first 4:16 of the third quarter.
- Sophomore Jillian Butler (Brecksville, Ohio) scored on a pass from junior Ashley Thomas (Summit, N.J.) at the 8:40 mark, but Joseph found the back of the net 17 seconds later.
- A defensive battle ensued until an unassisted goal by Flusche brought the Engineers within 10-6 with 1:56 left in the frame.
- MIT cut its deficit in half in the fourth quarter as Lam completed the hat trick and then Butler buried a player-advantage free-position goal with 8:31 left to play.
- Union ended it scoring drought three minutes later courtesy of a blast by Joseph, who then assisted on junior Christina Guanci's (Glastonbury, Conn.) goal with 1:17 remaining.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Gwen Flusche tallied four draw controls, two groundballs, one goal, one assist, and one caused turnover as senior Julianne Flusche (Ridgewood, N.J.) collected four draw controls.
- In net, sophomore Pauline Vien (Brookline, Mass.) produced seven saves, two groundballs, and one caused turnover in the first half as classmate Ashton Flather (Ipswich, Mass.) closed out the game with nine saves, one caused turnover, and one groundball.
- Schiller registered a hat trick while senior Greta Maurer (Merrimac, Mass.) totaled five draw controls, three groundballs, one caused turnover, and one assist.
- First-year Maddie Dineen (Wilton, Conn.) posted three groundballs and one caused turnover as junior Maddie Doyle (Needham, Mass.) notched four draw controls.
- Junior Sydney Widlitz (Guilford, Conn.) recorded nine saves and two groundballs.
