BOSTON, Mass. - The MIT softball team scored 25 runs in a doubleheader victory over Wentworth on the road on Wednesday afternoon. This is the second time this season that the Engineers have posted back-to-back games, scoring 10 or more runs.

Senior Mackenzie Bivin (San Diego, Calif.) set the program homerun record with her 11th career longball in game two. Bivin set the program's career RBI record last season.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME ONE:

  • Bivin and senior Mikayla Cable (Valrico, Fla.) singled in the second and came around to score on a double to left center by junior Ava Ladd (Austin, Texas) for the first runs of the game.
  • Wentworth worked back-to-back walks in bottom of the frame, but senior Katie Katsuyama (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) retired the next three batters. The Leopards got two more runners on in the bottom of the third, but Katsyuama once again got out of the inning without allowing a run.
  • MIT hit two homers in the fourth. The first, a two-run shot off the bat of junior Olivia Scarpaci (Staten Island, N.Y.) gave the Engineers a four-run lead. First year Maggie Feng (Brookfield, Wis.) hit her first collegiate homerun to put MIT up five.
  • A six-run fifth put the game away for the Engineers. Scarpaci tripled home two runs as did first year Delaney Benevides (Plainville, Mass.). Ladd, and Cable knocked in the two other runs for MIT.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Katsuyama earned the win to move to 1-1 on the year. She allowed just one run on two hits with three strikeouts.
  • Senior Kennedy Adkison (San Jose, Calif.), Cable, Scarpaci, Ladd, and Feng all had two hits in the game. Scarpaci led the way with four RBI followed by Ladd with three and Benevides with two.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME TWO:

  • Cable tacked on a run in the third on an RBI single and MIT added four more in the fourth, highlighted by Bivin's record breaking three-run shot to go up 7-0.
  • The Leopards got a run back in the bottom of the fourth, but the Engineers responded, scoring seven in the fifth. Not to be outdone, Wentworth scored five times in the bottom of the frame, but MIT held on to secure the five-inning win.
