Baseball Drops NEWMAC Opener at Babson, 9-5

BABSON PARK, Mass. — Grad student Teddy Schoenfeld (Boulder, Colo.) opened the game with a lead-off home run but the MIT baseball team couldn't capitalize on the early momentum, falling to Babson College, 9-5, in the NEWMAC opener for both teams on Tuesday afternoon at Govoni Field.

THE BASICS:

  • Score: Babson College 9, MIT 5
  • Records: MIT (5-9 overall, 0-1 NEWMAC ), Babson College (8-3 Overall, 1-0 NEWMAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Schoenfeld went yard in the first at-bat of the game to give MIT an early 1-0 lead against Babson starter Tristen Spalter (Sergeantsville, N.J.). First year John Spivey (Saint Louis, Mo.) singled to center field in the next at-bat but Spalter settled in after, recording three consecutive outs.
  • MIT carried the 1-0 lead into the second inning before Babson scored seven runs on five hits and one MIT error to take a 7-1 lead.
  • The inning opened with an MIT error that allowed Ryan Hvozdovic (Hillsborough, N.J.) to reach base. Hvozdovic moved into scoring position when the next batter, Ryan Liss (Hollywood, Fla.) doubled down the right field line.
  • MIT starter Brian Rapanan (Gurnee, Ill.) got a fly out in the next at-bat but the next four batters all reached base, as Babson took a 4-1 lead. Brant Savage (Charlton, Mass.) then delivered the big hit in the inning, hitting a three-run home run to make the score 7-1.
  • MIT got one run back thanks to a home run from grad student CJ McCarthy (Pawling, N.Y.) in the top of the fourth inning. However, Babson immediately countered in the home half of the inning, scoring when Savage singled to center field to score Jack Julian (Manchester, Mass.) and make the score 8-2.
  • The Engineers cut the deficit to 8-4 in the top of the sixth inning. Spivey started the rally with a single, moving to second when Zev Moore (Jerusalem, Israel) was hit by a pitch with one out. Senior Malachi Soqui (Castaic, Calif.) grounded out to first to move both runners into scoring position before classmate Reed Tubbs (Pflugerville, Texas) singled up the middle to bring both runners home.
  • Babson added another run in the bottom of the eighth, taking advantage of an MIT error to move ahead, 9-4.
  • MIT loaded the bases with no one out in the top of the ninth inning but could only manage one run on a fielder's choice against Babson reliever Zander Teator (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.).

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Spalter pitched seven innings to earn his second win of the season for Babson (2-1 overall).
  • Teator was the last of three pitchers for the Beavers, as Luke McClintock (South Hamilton, Mass.) pitched a scoreless eighth inning.
  • Rapanan took the loss for MIT, giving up six earned over 1.2 inning.
  • Senior Phillip Hood (Grapevine, Texas) pitched 2.2 scoreless innings of relief for MIT.
  • Schoenfeld and Tubbs each finished with three hits to lead all players
  • Spivey was 2-for-5 with a run scored. Spivey and Tubbs each have hit safely in four straight games.
  • Tubbs scored a run in the ninth and now leads MIT with 13 runs scored on the season.
