Men's Volleyball Grabs 3-1 Road Win Over Elms

CHICOPEE, Mass. - The MIT men's volleyball team picked up a 3-1 road win over Elms at Picknelly Arena on Thursday night. The Engineers had three players record 10 kills in the match.  
 
THE BASICS:  

  • Score: MIT 3, Elms 1 (25-13, 27-25, 25-21, 25-22) 
  • Records: MIT (13-12 Overall), Elms (5-18 Overall) 

HOW IT HAPPENED  

  • Set 1: A 4-0 run put MIT up 12-4, and another 4-0 run pushed the Engineer lead to 18-6. Elms chipped away, getting the deficit to nine, but MIT took the set 25-13.  
  • Set 2: After falling behind 2-0, MIT rattled off 5-0 run capped by a kill from senior Grant Oh (Irvine, Calif.). The Blazers used a 4-0 run to pull to within one at 14-13, but the Engineers held the lead until a kill from John Bellafronte (Enfield, Conn.) tied the match at 18. The Blazers took a 21-20 lead off an MIT error, but a kill from first year Kristof Spellen (New Rochelle, N.Y.) and an ace from sophomore Aden Adjei (Pooler, Ga.) put MIT back in front, 23-22. The teams went back-and-forth before Elms used a 3-0 run to secure the 27-25 win. 
  • Set 3: With MIT leading 13-9, Elms went on a 4-0 run to pull even. Spellen eventually put the Engineers up 17-14 with a kill, and an ace from junior Ben Volokh (Studio City, Calif.) gave the visitors a 21-15 advantage. Elms held around, pulling to within three at 24-21, but a service error gave MIT the 25-21 win.  
  • Set 4: Five straight points from Elms gave them a 10-8 lead, but a 3-0 spurt from MIT would tie the match at 13. The Blazers quickly regained the lead, but another 3-0 run from the Engineers put them in the lead, 20-18 and an ace from Spellen sealed the win, 25-22.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:  

  • Volokh, Spellen, and first year Maddox Brandenburg (Carlsblad, Calif.) all collected 10 kills in the match. Spellen led the way with eight digs.  
  • Volokh recorded three aces with Spellen and Brandenburg adding two. Brandenburg and junior Michael Rini (Huntington Beach, Calif.) registered five blocks.  
  • First year Warren Nam (Glendale, Calif.) finished with 20 assists and senior Riley Oh (Irvine, Oh) collected 17.  

UP NEXT: 

  • The Engineers will remain on the road as they head to Elmira for a pivotal UVC match, tomorrow, Friday March 28 at 6:00 PM. The Blazers will take part in a tri-match on Saturday, March 29 with matches against Dean and Emerson.
