Men's Volleyball Falls to Elmira in Straight Sets

ELMIRA, N.Y. - The MIT men's volleyball team fell to Elmira in straight sets on Friday night at Speidel Gymnasium in UVC play. 
 
THE BASICS:  

  • Score: Elmira 3, MIT 0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-21) 
  • Records: MIT (13-12 Overall, 0-5 UVC), Elmira (16-6, 0-4 UVC) 

HOW IT HAPPENED:  

  • Set 1: After an ace from junior Michael Rini (Huntington Beach, Calif.) got the Engineers to within one at 14-13, Elmira rattled off four-straight points to build a 18-13 lead. Junior Ben Volokh (Studio City, Calif.) got MIT to 18-16 with a kill, but the Soaring Eagles pulled away for the 25-19 set one victory.  
  • Set 2: Volokh gave the Engineers an 8-7 lead, however the host went on a 9-0 run to build a 16-8 advantage and went on to take the second set, 25-16.  
  • Set 3: Trailing 19-12, MIT scored three-straight to pull to within four. Elmira built its lead back up to 23-16 before back-to-back kills from senior Grant Oh (Irvine, Calif.) and an attacking error made it a 23-19 set. Another Oh kill and error cut the Elmira lead to 24-21, but the host held on for the victory.   

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:  

  • Grant Oh led MIT with 17 kills and two blocks. 
  • Senior Riley Oh (Irvine, Calif.) finished with 30 assists. 
  • First year Kristof Spellen (New Rochelle, N.Y.) contributed seven digs with junior Kevin Windisch (Placentia, Calif.) adding six. 

UP NEXT: 

  • MIT concludes conference play tomorrow, Saturday March 29 with a 1:00 PM match at No. 16 Hobart. The Soaring Eagles continue with UVC action as they travel to Nazareth on Wednesday, April 2 for a 6:00 PM match.
