Springfield Holds on to Defeat Men’s Lacrosse, 15-13

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – MIT produced five goals during the last five minutes of regulation, but it would not be enough as Springfield College held on for a 15-13 victory in NEWMAC men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Roberts Field. Senior Nick Stiles (New Canaan, Conn.) powered the Engineers with six goals, helping him eclipse 100 career points. Senior Riley Burgmyer (Somers, Conn.) tallied two goals, three assists, and four groundballs for the Pride.

THE BASICS:
  • Score: Springfield 15, MIT 13
  • Records: MIT (3-6 Overall, 1-2 NEWMAC); Springfield (4-5 Overall, 3-0 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Senior Dylan Nelson (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.) opened the scoring when he redirected a feed from junior Garrett Campagna (Lancaster, Pa.) after 1:07 elapsed. Springfield followed with goals from sophomore Jake Degnan (Mahopac, N.Y.) and sophomore Rory Scanlon (Maple Grove, Minn.). The Engineers evened the score at 2-2 after Stiles connected on a pass from junior Zach Bleil (New Canaan, Conn.) with just under five minutes left in the quarter.
  • The Pride controlled the action in the second stanza as it outscored MIT, 5-1, with junior Matt Webb (Northport, N.Y.) scoring twice.
  • Springfield continued to pull away in the third quarter as it established an 11-4 advantage at the 8:59 mark.
  • The Engineers countered with a 3-1 burst that began with a goal from Stiles and featured back-to-back strikes by Campagna.
  • MIT narrowed the gap to 12-8 courtesy of a man-up goal from Stiles that was set up by Campagna just 1:42 into the fourth quarter.
  • The Pride responded with quick goals from Webb and Scanlon before adding one from Degnan with 6:36 remaining.
  • Stiles sparked the Engineers' late rally with 4:54 on the clock and then junior CJ Sanchez (New Rochelle, N.Y.) found the back of the net 40 seconds later.
  • Stiles buried a pass from Bleil with three minutes left as Nelson trimmed the deficit to 15-12 with 2:25 to go.
  • MIT won the ensuing faceoff, but it could not convert both attempts on goal. After an exchange of possessions, Stiles scored on a feed from Campagna as time expired.
