Big First Quarter Propels Women’s Lacrosse to 23-5 Win Over Wellesley

WELLESLEY, Mass. – MIT outscored Wellesley College, 11-1, in the first quarter en route to a 23-5 NEWMAC women's lacrosse victory on Saturday afternoon. Junior Ashley Thomas (Summit, N.J.) produced 10 points for the second time this season as she registered five goals and five assists to go along with two caused turnovers.
 
THE BASICS:
  • Score: MIT 23, Wellesley 5
  • Records: MIT (4-5 Overall, 3-0 NEWMAC); Wellesley (1-7 Overall, 0-3 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Back-to-back goals by senior Julianne Flusche (Ridgewood, N.J.) sparked a 6-0 run that spanned 2:51.
  • Wellesley got on the scoreboard at the 7:43 mark, but MIT replied with five consecutive goals. During the burst, Thomas and junior Nina Petulla (Natick, Mass.) scored twice as first-year Alexis Reinard (Nottingham, Pa.) chipped in a goal and an assist.
  • Flusche opened the second quarter with a pair of goals while junior Gwen Flusche (Ridgewood, N.J.) made the score 14-1 after connecting on a pass from Thomas with 5:29 on the clock. The Blue ended its scoring drought almost three minutes later.
  • The Engineers recorded five unanswered goals in the third quarter, increasing their advantage to 19-2. Seven players notched at least one point in the frame.
  • Wellesley scored twice during the first four minutes of the fourth quarter, but sophomore Ava Malysa (Manhasset, N.Y.) found the back of the net courtesy of a feed from junior Annica Lam (Livingston, N.J.) at the 7:18 mark.
  • The Blue moved the score to 20-5 after a free position goal with just under five minutes remaining.
  • MIT closed out the game with three goals as sophomore Maeve McGinnis (Brunswick, Ohio) scored twice and Julianne Flusche earned two assists.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Julianne Flusche tallied four goals, three assists, and two groundballs as Petulla posted three goals and two assists.
  • Reinard finished with two goals and two assists while Gwen Flusche registered nine draw controls, one goal, and two assists.
  • Senior Sydney Pyon (Garnet Valley, Pa.) posted two goals, one assist, three draw controls, and two caused turnovers as sophomore Emilie Dubiel (Hobe Sound, Fla.) collected four groundballs and one caused turnover.
  • Sophomore Laura Day (Old Saybrook, Conn.) chipped in five draw controls.
  • In net, sophomore Pauline Vien (Brookline, Mass.) made four saves in the first half while junior Molly Dulde (Delafield, Wis.) turned away three shots in the second half.
