Baseball Can’t Hold Early Lead in Setback at UMass Boston

BOSTON, Mass. — The MIT baseball team jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning but host UMass Boston responded by scoring 16 runs over the next eight innings to earn a 16-6 victory in non-conference play on Tuesday afternoon at Monan Park.

THE BASICS:

  • Score: UMass Boston 16, MIT 6
  • Records: UMass Boston (4-0 Overall), MIT (0-2 Overall)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • MIT scored three runs on two hits and a pair of UMass Boston errors in the first inning. Back-to-back walks to Teddy Schoenfeld (Boulder, Colo.) and Maximo Del Pino (New York, N.Y.) set-up grad student CJ McCarthy (Pawling, N.Y.) to drive home the game's first run with an RBI double. Junior Zev Moore (Jerusalem, Israel) emptied the bases two batters later with a two-RBI single to score McCarthy and Del Pino.
  • UMass Boston went scoreless in the bottom of the first inning before scoring in six consecutive innings to take control of the contest.
  • The Beacons pulled within one run in the bottom of the second inning thanks to a two-RBI triple off the bat of senior Mike Meagher (Marston's Mills, Mass.). Meagher was stranded at third as the Beacons left the bases loaded to end the inning.
  • Meagher then rallied the Beacons past MIT in the bottom of the third inning, scoring junior Nick Farnacci (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and grad student Jacob Levine (Easton, Mass.) to make the score 5-3 with a two-RBI double, after the hosts had tied the game when a runner scored earlier in the inning on a passed ball.
  • Junior Justin Gouveia (Dartmouth, Mass.) walked with one away in the fourth, scoring on an RBI double from sophomore Brandon Gaer (Rocky Hill, Conn.) that made the score 6-3.
  • The Beacons put the game out of reach in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring five runs on four hits, including a pair of two-RBI singles from Gouveia and Gaer, to make the score 11-3.
  • MIT got one run back in the top of the sixth, as John Dwyer opened the inning with a double before advancing to third base on a wild pitch and scoring on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Owen Malone (Portsmouth, R.I.). The Engineers also scored a run courtesy of Dwyer in the top of seventh when he singled to drive home Zev Moore after Moore had reached on base on a fielders choice earlier in the inning.
  • Unfortunately for the Engineers, UMass Boston also scored in the bottom of the sixth and the bottom of the seventh, scoring one run on an RBI ground out from Meagher in the sixth and four runs in the bottom of seventh, despite managing just one hit.
  • MIT added another run in top of the ninth inning, as Hanvin Lee's (Porter Ranch, Calif.) first collegiate hit was an RBI single that scored Zev Moore from second to give the game its 16-6 final.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Meagher finished the contest 3-for-4 with two doubles, a triple and five RBI for UMass Boston. He was one of seven players in the Beacons lineup to record at least one RBI on the afternoon.
  • Gaer added three hits in four at-bats, driving in three runs while scoring a pair for UMass Boston.
  • First year Connor Curtis (Mansfield, Mass.) picked up the win on the mound for the Beacons, pitching two innings, giving up two hits and just one earned, while striking out two and walking one.
  • Senior Jimmy Moore (Los Gatos, Calif.) was charged with the loss for MIT, giving up four earned on four hits over two innings, while striking out two and walking one.
  • Dwyer went 3-for-4 to lead MIT with an RBI and a double. Senior Reed Tubbs (Pflugerville, Texas) finished 2-for-3 for MIT, while Zev Moore drove in a pair of runs and scored twice.
  • Zev Moore now has three RBIs in two games to open the season after driving 19 in 2024.
