Endicott Holds off Men’s Lacrosse, 16-11

BEVERLY, Mass. – A trio of goals in the fourth quarter helped Endicott College pull away for a 16-11 victory over MIT in a non-conference men's lacrosse game on Wednesday afternoon. Junior Bryce Metalios (Old Greenwich, Conn.) powered the Engineers with four goals and two assists.
 
THE BASICS:
  • Score: Endicott 16, MIT 11

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • MIT opened the scoring on a solo effort by senior Dylan Nelson (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.) after 1:44 elapsed and then Metalios increased the lead at the 8:42 mark. Endicott got on the scoreboard 30 seconds later, however, Metalios set up junior Oscar Lindenthal (Vero Beach, Fla.) with 1:03 on the clock to give the Engineers a 3-1 edge.
  • The Gulls cut their deficit half just 34 seconds into the second quarter, but MIT responded with a goal from senior Nick Stiles (New Canaan, Conn.) with 8:53 left. Endicott countered with five consecutive goals, resulting in a 7-4 lead with 1:09 to go. Junior Zach Bleil (New Canaan, Conn.) ended the Engineers' scoring drought when he connected on a pass from Metalios with 19 seconds remaining.
  • The Gulls' advantage grew to 10-5 after three goals during the first five minutes of the third quarter.
  • MIT put together a 3-1 spurt that was capped by graduate student Andrew Palleiko's (Hopkinton, Mass.) goal off a faceoff win at the 5:39 mark.
  • Following two more goals by the hosts that made the score 13-8, Metalios found the back of the net with nine seconds left.
  • Metalios narrowed the gap to 13-10 courtesy of a feed from sophomore Hayden Calabretta (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) just over four minutes into the fourth quarter.
  • The score remained unchanged until Endicott rattled off three straight goals in a span of 2:22, the last coming with 6:17 on the clock.
  • Metalios recorded the final goal of the game as junior CJ Sanchez (New Rochelle, N.Y.) earned the assist with 1:36 remaining.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Stiles finished with two goals and an assist while Nelson scored twice. Sanchez ended the day with two assists.
  • Palleiko paced MIT with six groundballs as junior Tim Haarmann (Boxford, Mass.) produced five groundballs and two caused turnovers.
  • Sophomore Ashton Axe (Portola Valley, Calif.) totaled four groundballs, one caused turnover and one assist while junior Collin Lung (Lynbrook, N.Y.) collected a career-high 19 saves.
