Baseball Cruises to 13-1 NEWMAC Win Over Babson; Schoenfeld Surpasses 200 Career Hits

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Grad student Teddy Schoenfeld (Boulder, Colo.) set the tone with a lead off home run in the bottom of the first inning as the MIT baseball team hit four home runs in a 13-1 NEWMAC win over Babson College in seven innings at Fran O'Brien Field.

Schoenfeld finished the day 3-for-3 with a pair of RBIs, surpassing 200 career hits with a single through the right side of the infield in the bottom of the fifth inning. On the mound, junior Chase Rubin (Arlington, Va.) was outstanding for MIT, scattering five hits over six innings of work while surpassing 100 pitches to earn his third win of the season.

THE BASICS:

  • Score: MIT 13, Babson 1
  • Records: MIT (7-10 Overall, 2-1 NEWMAC), Babson College (11-5 Overall, 3-1 NEWMAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • MIT starter Matthew Spenner (Darien, Conn.) worked around a hit batter and a walk to toss a scoreless first inning for MIT.
  • Schoenfeld then struck early, sending a solo home run over the right field fence to give MIT a 1-0 lead. First year John Spivey (St. Louis, Mo.) followed with a hard-hit double into the left centerfield gap. Spivey would score later in the inning on an RBI single from junior Zev Moore (Jerusalem, Israel) to give MIT a 2-0 lead.
  • The Engineers carried the 2-0 lead into the top of the fourth inning before Babson pulled back a run courtesy of a solo home run from senior Walter Sadowsky (Morristown, N.J.) that made the score 2-1.
  • Leading 2-1, the Engineers broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth inning, hitting a pair of home runs to take a 7-1 lead. Junior Owen Malone (Portsmouth, R.I.) reached on a one-out walk before Schoenfeld recorded his 200th career hit. With two aboard, Spivey stepped in and hammered a pitch over the left field wall, hitting a three-run home run. The long ball was the third home run of his rookie season.
  • Babson starter Tristen Spalter (Sergeantsville, N.J.) got CJ McCarthy (Pawling, N.Y. ) swinging before hitting Zev Moore with a pitch. MIT senior Reed Tubbs (Pflugerville, Texas) then homered over the centerfield fence, scoring Moore and igniting a celebration from the MIT dugout.
  • Tubb's homer ended the day for Spalter, as he departed after 4.2 innings, giving up seven earned runs while striking out seven.
  • MIT carried the momentum into the sixth inning, scoring six runs on five hits and one Babson error to take a commanding 13-1 lead.
  • Sophomore Louis Hernandez (Glastonbury, Conn.) hit a solo home run to left field to open the inning, making the score 8-1. Schoenfeld, Spivey and McCarthy all added RBI hits increasing the advantage to 11-1. After reaching with an RBI single, McCarthy scored on a wild pitch to make the score 12-1. Zev Moore scored the final run of the game on a Babson error to push MIT ahead 13-1.
  • Rubin worked around a one-out single in the top of seventh inning to close out his six innings of work and the MIT victory.
