Baseball Erases Early Deficit, Picks Up 15-7 NEWMAC win at Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Senior Reed Tubbs (Pflugerville, Texas) delivered a three-run home run as part of a six-run third inning and senior Malachi Soqui (Castaic, Calif.) singled to drive in a pair of runs as part of a six-run eighth inning, as the MIT baseball team rallied to defeat Springfield College, 15-7, in NEWMAC action at Archie Allen Field.

THE BASICS:

  • Score: MIT 15, Springfield 7
  • Records: MIT (10-12 Overall. 5-2 NEWMAC), Springfield (7-15 Overall, 1-4 NEWMAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Springfield loaded the bases in the bottom of the first inning to set the stage for a Chris Balchius (Norwalk, Conn.) bases clearing triple that put the hosts up 3-0. The Pride would take a 4-0 lead when Jack Dunaisky (Longmeadow, Mass.) singled to score Balchius with no one out in the inning.
  • Trailing 4-0, MIT sophomore starter Mason Estrada (Covington, La.) locked in, striking out the side to end the threat. Estrada would go on to strike out seven, giving-up five runs, four earned, and walking four over 2.2 innings.
  • Grad student CJ McCarthy (Pawling, N.Y.) and junior Zev Moore (Jerusalem, Israel) opened the third inning with back-to-back singles before Tubbs closed the MIT deficit to one with his fourth home run of the season. MIT extended its lead to 6-4 later in the inning, as John Spivey (St. Louis, Mo.) drove in a pair of runs before McCarthy drove in Spivey.
  • Springfield scored a run on a failed pickoff attempt in the bottom half of the inning that made the score 6-5.
  • MIT was quick to counter, scoring two runs in the top of the fourth thanks to a two-RBI single off the bat of sophomore Louis Hernandez (Glastonbury, Conn.).
  • With the Engineers leading 8-5 and threatening to pull away in the contest, Springfield got on the board again, as Nate Garafalo (Kinderhook, N.Y.) scored on a wild pitch after reaching base with a lead off triple.
  • MIT held the 8-6 lead until the Engineers put the game out of reach with a six-run eighth inning. Soqui had two hits in the inning, including a two-RBI single to center that capped the six-run rally. Teddy Schoenfeld (Boulder, Colo.), Spivey, Jack Finnegan (Essex, Conn.) and Tubbs all add RBIs in the inning to help MIT take a 14-6 lead.
  • Both teams scored in the ninth inning. MIT got a run when Schoenfeld drove in Malone and Springfield scored thanks to an RBI single from Dunaisky as MIT took the 15-7 win.
