Men's Tennis Takes 6-1 Decision Over Coast Guard

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The MIT men's tennis team dropped just two sets on Saturday afternoon as the Engineers cruised to a 6-1 road NEWMAC victory over the United States Coast Guard Academy.
 
THE BASICS: 

  • Score: MIT 6, Coast Guard 1 
  • Records: MIT (7-6 Overall, 4-1 NEWMAC), Coast Guard (2-11 Overall, 1-4 NEWMAC) 

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • MIT went up 1-0 after sweeping all three doubles matches. Senior Ryan Xiao (Cary, N.C.) and sophomore Shrish Choudhary (Fremont, Calif.) opened doubles play with a 6-1 win in the third court followed by a 6-2 win in two doubles by grad student Kailas Kahler (Pawtucket, R.I.) and sophomore Grant Gallagher (Irvine, Calif.). Sophomore Adam Sun (Glendale, Calif.) and grad student Joseph Li (Naperville, Ill.) closed doubles play with a 6-3 victory. 
  • First year SangHyuk Im (Irvine, Calif.) earned the first singles win of the day with a 6-2, 6-4 win in No. 2 singles.  
  • Juniors Ethan Nguyen (Farmington, N.M.) and Jeremy Yu (Coppell, Texas) grabbed straight-set wins in No. 3 and No. 5 singles to put the Engineers up 4-0.  
  • First year Youngwoo Tahk (Sunnyvale, Calif.) gave MIT its fifth point of the day with a win in four singles. The Bears grabbed a three-set win in No. 1 singles. 
  • Junior Nicholas Liu (San Diego, Calif.) closed the day with a 6-1, 6-3 win in six singles.   

UP NEXT: 

  • The Engineers will head to Middlebury to take on the Panthers tomorrow, Sunday, April 13 at 4:00 PM. The Bears will be back in action on Monday, April 14 when they travel to Brandeis for a 3:30 PM match.
