CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The MIT softball team was swept by the visiting Tufts Jumbos in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon on Briggs Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME ONE:
- Madi Sewell (Huntington Beach, Calif.) laced a two-run double to left in the second to give the Jumbos the lead. Bela Jimenez (Oak Park, Calif.) later followed with a single to center to put Tufts up 3-0.
- Junior Ava Ladd (Austin, Texas) led off the third with a single and advanced to second on a Tufts error which put sophomore Arianna Kumar (San Diego, Calif.) on first with no outs. Sophia DiCocco (Bozrah, Conn.) got the next two Engineers out before first year Layla Thiessen (Carlsbad, Calif.) beat out a single to the mound to plate the first MIT run of the day.
- First year Maggie Feng (Brookfield, Wis.) led off the fourth with a single and advanced to third on another Tufts error off the bat of Thiessen. Feng then swiped home to cut the Tufts' lead in half. Senior Mikayla Cable (Valrico, Fla.) singled, and a double steal put two runners in scoring position for the hosts with one, but DiCocco got the final two outs without allowing another run.
- Senior Mackenzie Bivin (San Diego, Calif.) led off the fifth with a single to center then stole second. After advancing to third, Bivin then scored on an error by Tufts to bring MIT to within one.
- Cable bunted for a single and advanced to third on a throwing error with one out in the sixth but was left stranded.
- Bivin led off the seventh with a single, but Tufts got the next three outs for the win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Junior Caroline Langmeyer (Upper Arlington, Ohio) threw all seven innings but fell to 8-2. She allowed four runs on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
- DiCocco moved to 7-6 as she went six innings and gave up three earned runs on 10 hits.
- Cable and Bivin led the Engineers with three hits each in the game while Ladd added two hits.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME TWO:
- Cat Kawabe (Huntington Beach, Calif.) hit a double to center to put the Jumbos in front 1-0 in the second.
- Thiessen hit a two-out triple in the third and Ladd worked a walk, but the Engineers could not get the tying run across the plate.
- Kaitlyn Perucci (Coto De Caza, Calif.) doubled home two more runs for Tufts in the fourth to take a 3-0 lead. Another double by Tufts in the fifth gave them a 4-0 lead.
- Feng doubled in the bottom of the fifth and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Cable, but the Engineers could not get the run home.
- Senior Kennedy Adkison (San Jose, Calif.) doubled down the leftfield line with one out in the sixth and came around to score on a Kumar single.
- First year Amanda Huang (Redmond, Wash.) walked to lead off the bottom of the seventh and advanced to second on an infield single from Cable. A fielder's choice from Thiessen scored Huang to make it a two-run game. Ladd then singled and a wild pitch put the tying runs in scoring position with two outs, but Tufts got the final out to hold on for the sweep.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Cable and Thiessen led the way with two hits each in the game.
- Junior Nicole Doering (St. Louis Park, Minn.) threw five innings and suffered her third loss of the season as she allowed four runs (two earned) on six hits. First year Sarah Blackett (St. Petersburg, Fla.) threw the final two innings allowing just one hit.
UP NEXT:
- MIT is back into conference play with a doubleheader against Salve Regina on Friday, April 18 with first pitch of the twin bill at 3:00 PM. The Jumbos are also back on the field on Friday with a doubleheader at Trinity.
