CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Back-to-back goals from senior
Julianne Flusche (Ridgewood, N.J.) during the first six minutes of the fourth quarter created enough of a cushion as the MIT women's lacrosse team held on to defeat Springfield College, 13-11, in NEWMAC action on Wednesday night. Flusche finished with four goals while senior Samantha Andresen (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) totaled four goals and two caused turnovers for the Pride.
THE BASICS:

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Junior Gwen Flusche (Ridgewood, N.J.) redirected a feed from junior Annica Lam (Livingston, N.J.) just 52 seconds into the game. However, sophomore Izzy Lalancette (Feeding Hills, Mass.) replied with a pair of goals to put Springfield in front at the 8:34 mark. An exchange of goals followed as junior Lily Johnson (Oceanside, N.J.) gave the Pride a 4-3 lead with 1:18 left in the opening frame.
- The Engineers had the upper hand in the second stanza as they outscored Springfield, 6-2, resulting in a 9-6 advantage at halftime. Lam scored twice while Andresen provided both goals for the Pride.
- Senior Sydney Pyon (Garnet Valley, Pa.) increased MIT's cushion 1:06 into the third quarter, however, Andresen replied by completing the hat trick.
- An unassisted goal by junior Ashley Thomas (Summit, N.J.) moved the score to 11-7 at the 9:33 mark. After almost four minutes of scoreless play, back-to-back goals from senior Lilly Vey (Foxboro, Mass.) cut Springfield's deficit in half heading into the fourth quarter.
- The Pride narrowed the gap to 11-10 after Johnson redirected a feed from senior Isabella Mazzi (Niantic, Conn.) 1:05 into in the final period.
- Following a pair of saves by sophomore Pauline Vien (Brookline, Mass.), Julianne Flusche scored what proved to be the game-winning goal on a pass from Gwen Flusche with 9:24 on the clock. MIT won the ensuing draw control and Julianne Flusche found the back of the net 42 seconds later, increasing the small lead to 13-10.
- A defensive battle ensued until Andresen's blast with 1:36 left to play. Gwen Flusche collected the draw control, but a series of turnovers closed out the game.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Lam finished with two goals and one assist while Gwen Flusche tallied 12 draw controls, three groundballs, one goal, and two assists.
- Thomas posted one goal and two assists as Pyon registered two goals, three draw controls, and two groundballs.
- Sophomore Alexa Cohen (Media, Pa.) notched three groundballs and two caused turnovers while junior Nina Petulla (Natick, Mass.) contributed three caused turnovers and one goal.
- Vien ended the night with 12 saves for MIT.
- Johnson compiled two goals, one assist, five draw controls, two groundballs, and one caused turnover as graduate student Hannah Hibbert (Center Harbor, N.H.) produced three groundballs and three caused turnovers.
- In net, graduate student Kate Laico (East Meadow, N.Y.) collected 11 saves.
