Women’s Lacrosse Holds Off Springfield, 13-11

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Back-to-back goals from senior Julianne Flusche (Ridgewood, N.J.) during the first six minutes of the fourth quarter created enough of a cushion as the MIT women's lacrosse team held on to defeat Springfield College, 13-11, in NEWMAC action on Wednesday night. Flusche finished with four goals while senior Samantha Andresen (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) totaled four goals and two caused turnovers for the Pride.

However, sophomore Izzy Lalancette (Feeding Hills, Mass.) replied with a pair of goals to put Springfield in front at the 8:34 mark. An exchange of goals followed as junior Lily Johnson (Oceanside, N.J.) gave the Pride a 4-3 lead with 1:18 left in the opening frame.
  • The Engineers had the upper hand in the second stanza as they outscored Springfield, 6-2, resulting in a 9-6 advantage at halftime. Lam scored twice while Andresen provided both goals for the Pride.
  • Senior Sydney Pyon (Garnet Valley, Pa.) increased MIT's cushion 1:06 into the third quarter, however, Andresen replied by completing the hat trick.
  • An unassisted goal by junior Ashley Thomas (Summit, N.J.) moved the score to 11-7 at the 9:33 mark. After almost four minutes of scoreless play, back-to-back goals from senior Lilly Vey (Foxboro, Mass.) cut Springfield's deficit in half heading into the fourth quarter.
  • The Pride narrowed the gap to 11-10 after Johnson redirected a feed from senior Isabella Mazzi (Niantic, Conn.) 1:05 into in the final period.
  • Following a pair of saves by sophomore Pauline Vien (Brookline, Mass.), Julianne Flusche scored what proved to be the game-winning goal on a pass from Gwen Flusche with 9:24 on the clock. MIT won the ensuing draw control and Julianne Flusche found the back of the net 42 seconds later, increasing the small lead to 13-10.
