No. 11 Women’s Tennis Battles Back to Defeat No. 13 Amherst, 5-2

AMHERST, Mass. – The No. 11 MIT women's tennis team won five of six singles matches to rally for a 5-2 victory at No. 13 Amherst College on Saturday afternoon.
 
THE BASICS:
  • Score: No. 11 MIT 5, No. 13 Amherst 2
  • Records: No. 11 MIT (13-2 Overall); No. 13 Amherst (10-6 Overall)
HOW IT HAPPENED - DOUBLES:
  • Juniors Alaina Kolli (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) and Artemis Pados (Delray Beach, Fla.) defeated sophomore Lily Dounchis (Naples, Fla.) and senior Deliala Charles Friedman (Brooklyn, N.Y.), 6-0, in the top spot.
  • Senior Jay Lu (Austin, Texas) and first-year Chloe Zeng (Austin, Texas) won the first two games in the No. 2 position, but seniors Amy Cui (East Brunswick, N.J.) and Katie Hart (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.) came from behind to record a 6-3 victory.
  • In a back-and-forth battle in the No. 3 slot, sophomores Saina Deshpande (Pune, India) and Anastasia Samets (Ocean, N.J.) held a 5-4 edge. However, sophomore Greta Stechschulte (Leawood, Kan.) and senior Mia Kintiroglou (New Vernon, N.J.) won the next three games to capture the doubles point.
HOW IT HAPPENED - SINGLES:
  • First-year Tina She (Stouffville, Ontario) defeated Kolli, 6-2, 6-2, in the No. 5 slot.
  • First-year Fiona Lee (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) started MIT's comeback with a 6-4, 6-1 win against Dounchis at the top of the ladder.
  • Lu won five straight games to take the first set, 6-3, versus Friedman in the No. 3 spot. Lu carried the momentum into the second set, jumping out to a 5-0 advantage en route to another 6-3 decision.
  • Deshpande battled junior Sophie Diop (Boston, Mass.) for a 6-4, 6-4 victory in the No. 4 position.
  • In the No. 2 position, Zeng held off Cui for a 6-4, 6-3 victory to clinch the match.
  • First-year Cody Huang (Plano, Texas) topped Samets, 6-4, in the first set; however, Samets responded with a 6-4 victory over her own. Trailing 8-6 in the super tiebreaker, Samets won three straight points to reclaim the lead. Huang evened the score at 9-9 but Samets claimed the next two points for the 11-9 win.
