No. 7 Women’s Tennis Defeats Salve Regina, 7-0, on Senior Day

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The No. 7 MIT women's tennis team closed out the NEWMAC regular season by defeating Salve Regina University, 7-0, on Saturday afternoon. With the win the Engineers secured the No. 1 seed for the upcoming NEWMAC Championship, marking their 10th regular season title in 11 seasons.

  • Records: No. 7 MIT (14-2 Overall, 8-0 NEWMAC); Salve Regina (5-12, 2-6 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED - DOUBLES:
  • Senior Jay Lu (Austin, Texas) and first-year Chloe Zeng (Austin, Texas) defeated sophomore Madigan Murphy (York, Maine) and junior Sadie Rieg (Carlisle, Pa.), 6-0, in the No. 2 position.
  • Sophomores Saina Deshpande (Pune, India) and Anastasia Samets (Ocean, N.J.) captured the doubles point courtesy of a 6-1 victory against seniors Elena Murdock (Westerly, R.I.) and Natalia Vega (Speonk, N.Y.) in the No. 3 slot.
  • In the top spot, juniors Alaina Kolli (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) and Artemis Pados (Delray Beach, Fla.) defeated sophomores Stephanie Davis (Kinnelon, N.J.) and Kaydin Pinto (Acushnet, Mass.), 6-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED - SINGLES:
  • Lu defeated Murphy, 6-1, 6-0, in the No. 3 spot.
  • Deshpande cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win against Rieg in the No. 4 position.
  • First-year Fiona Lee (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Pinto at the top of the ladder.
  • Zeng topped Davis, 6-1, 6-0, in the No. 2 slot.
  • Samets recorded a 6-0, 6-1 win versus Murdock in the No. 5 position.
  • First-year Megan Sun (Newbury Park, Calif.) completed the sweep by defeating Vega, 6-0, 6-1, in the No. 6 spot.
UP NEXT:
  • Recipients of a first-round bye, MIT will host a semifinal match on Saturday, May 3 at 12:00 PM against either No. 4 Smith College or No. 5 Springfield College.
