Men's Volleyball Earns 3-0 Sweep of Lasell

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The MIT men's volleyball team earned a three-set victory over Lasell on Wednesday night in Rockwell Cage. The Lasers had been 6-1 in their previous seven matches. 
 
THE BASICS:  

  • Score: MIT 3, Lasell 0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-18) 
  • Records: MIT (14-14 Overall), Lasell (19-7 Overall) 

HOW IT HAPPENED  

  • Set 1: Lasell used a 3-0 run to take a 16-14 lead and eventually built a 19-16 lead. From there, MIT rattled off three-straight points, punctuated by an ace from first year Kristof Spellen (New Rochelle, N.Y.) to tie the match. With the set knotted at 20, MIT scored five of the next six points with a kill from senior Grant Oh (Irvine, Calif.) sealing the 25-21 win.  
  • Set 2: With the Lasers leading 20-18, MIT scored five-straight points to go up 23-20 with a kill from first year Maddox Brandenburg (Carlsblad, Calif.) giving the Engineers the 25-22 win. 
  • Set 3: A 4-0 MIT run put the host up 15-10. Lasell chipped away, pulling to 19-16, but back-to-back kills from Brandenburg and Oh sealed the victory for the Engineers.   

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:  

  • Oh led the way with 20 kills, one shy of his career high. He is also four kills away from 1,000. Oh also had a block, ace, six digs, and two assists. 
  • Junior Ben Volokh (Studio City, Calif.) and Spellen finished with nine and eight kills respectively. 
  • Senior Riley Oh (Irvine, Calif.) finished with 38 assists and two blocks. 
  • Junior Kevin Windisch (Placentia, Calif.) and Spellen had seven digs a piece in the match.  

UP NEXT: 

  • MIT concludes its season with a tri-match at Rockwell Cage on Saturday, April 5. The Engineers will host Rutgers-Newark at 12:00 PM followed by Curry at 4:00 PM. The Lasers will play Dean College tomorrow, Thursday April 3, at 7:00 PM.
