No. 16 Women’s Tennis Tops Wheaton, 7-0

NORTON, Mass. – The No. 16 MIT women's tennis team returned to action by defeating Wheaton College, 7-0, in a NEWMAC match on Wednesday afternoon.
 
THE BASICS:
  • Score: No. 16 MIT 7, Wheaton 0
  • Records: No. 16 MIT (8-2 Overall, 3-0 NEWMAC); Wheaton (5-7 Overall, 2-2 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED - DOUBLES:
  • Senior Jay Lu (Austin, Texas) and first-year Chloe Zeng (Austin, Texas) jumped out to a 5-0 lead and then defeated sophomores Asia Hollis (Hamilton, Bermuda) and Laila Haraj-Sai (Madison, Conn.), 6-1, in the No. 2 position.
  • In the No. 3 slot, sophomore Anastasia Samets (Ocean, N.J.) and first-year Megan Sun (Newbury Park, Calif.) clinched the doubles point courtesy of a 6-0 victory against junior Haylee Doiron (Lowell, Mass.) and sophomore Taylor Wilson (Dover, N.H.).
  • Trailing 2-1 to juniors Alissa Ortiz (El Paso, Texas) and Kara Greenlee (San Antonio, Texas), juniors Alaina Kolli (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) and Artemis Pados (Delray Beach, Fla.) won five straight games to record a 6-2 decision in the top spot.
HOW IT HAPPENED - SINGLES:
  • Samets defeated Ortiz, 6-0, 6-2, in the No. 3 position.
  • Lu generated a 6-2, 6-2 win over Haraj-Sai in the No. 2 slot.
  • Tied at 2-2 in the first set at the No. 4 spot, Sun rattled off four straight victories and then she notched a 6-0 win against Hollis to clinch the match.
  • Zeng claimed the last two games of the first set to defeat Greenlee, 6-3, at the top of the ladder. In the second set, Zeng turned a 2-2 tie into a 6-2 win.
  • Sophomore Alicen Liu (Novi, Mich.) defeated Wilson, 6-0, 6-2, in the No. 5 position.
  • After conceding the first game, sophomore Sophia Min (Naples, Fla.) won six straight against first-year Maya Brennan (Valatie, N.Y.) in the first set at the No. 6 slot. In the second set, Min built a 5-1 lead en route to a 6-3 victory.
