CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – After trading goals to start the game, No. 2 seed MIT rattled off 15 in a row en route to a 21-3 victory over No. 7 seed Salve Regina University in the first round of the NEWMAC Women's Lacrosse Championship on Saturday afternoon. Senior
Julianne Flusche (Ridgewood, N.J.) tallied five goals, two assists, four draw controls, three groundballs, and two caused turnovers for the Engineers while sophomore Daniella Bruno (Niantic, Conn.) posted six draw controls and three groundballs for the Seahawks.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Junior Nina Petulla (Natick, Mass.) opened the scoring after 3:11 elapsed, but senior Cameron Baston (Plantsville, Conn.) tied the game 23 seconds later. Just 25 seconds following the draw, junior Annica Lam (Livingston, N.J.) gave MIT the slight edge. Senior Kayli Garcia's (Southington, Conn.) free position goal evened the score at 2-2 at the 9:22 mark.
- A defensive battle ensued for the next four minutes until the Engineers generated five unanswered goals to go up 7-2. Flusche scored twice, junior Ashley Thomas (Summit, N.J.) recorded a hat trick, and junior Gwen Flusche (Ridgewood, N.J.) earned two assists.
- MIT continued to pull away in the second quarter courtesy of seven consecutive goals. Thomas produced two goals and an assist while first-year Alexis Reinard (Nottingham, Pa.) contributed one goal and two assists.
- In the third quarter, goals from Lam, Julianne Flusche, and first-year Cecilia McCarthy (New York, N.Y.) increased the Engineers' advantage to 17-2 with 10:34 on the clock.
- Junior Delia Tarasco (Seaford, N.Y.) ended the Seahawks' scoring drought when she redirected a feed from senior Holly Sullivan (Pembroke, Mass.) with just under seven minutes remaining.
- MIT countered with four goals during the final 18 minutes of regulation.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Thomas finished with five goals, four assists, and three draw controls as Lam totaled four goals and two assists.
- Gwen Flusche registered one goal, three assists, and four draw controls while Petulla produced two goals, three groundballs, and two caused turnovers.
- In net, sophomore Pauline Vien (Brookline, Mass.) collected six saves in the first half as classmate Ashton Flather (Ipswich, Mass.) notched two saves, two caused turnovers, and two groundballs and in the second half.
- Basston chipped in two draw controls while Garcia added a caused turnover.
- First-year goalie Flynn Kayajan (Hyannis, Mass.) compiled 11 saves, four groundballs, and one caused turnover.
UP NEXT:
- MIT will host No. 3 seed Springfield College in the semifinals of the NEWMAC Championship on Wednesday, April 30 at 6:00 PM.
- The Engineers will be making their 10th consecutive appearance in the semifinals and will be facing Springfield for the second year in a row. Last year, MIT defeated the Pride, 15-10.
