Baseball Splits NEWMAC Doubleheader at Wheaton; Sochi Hits Two Home Runs in Game One

NORTON, Mass. — Senior Malachi Soqui (Castaic, Calif.) hit a pair of home runs and starting pitcher Mason Estrada (Covington, La.) struck out 12 batters over six innings in game one as the MIT baseball team split a NEWMAC doubleheader with Wheaton College on Sunday afternoon at Sidell Stadium. MIT won game one, 6-1, with Wheaton earning a 5-3 win in game two.

THE BASICS:

  • Scores:
    • Game One: MIT 10, Wheaton
    • Game Two: Wheaton, MIT
  • Records: MIT (14-16 Overall, 9-4 NEWMAC), Wheaton (18-16 Overall, 9-6 NEWMAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED - Game One:

  • Following a scoreless first inning, Soqui homered in the top of the second inning to give MIT a 1-0 lead.
  • After striking out two in the bottom of the first, Estrada went to work over the next five innings, working around a pair of base runners to strike out the side in the bottom of the second before tallying at least one strikeout in each of the next four innings. Estrada's day ended with a 1-2-3 sixth inning that included pair of strikeouts and a fly out to right.
  • MIT's starter left the game with a six-run lead as the Engineers added a run in the fifth and four runs in the top of the sixth.
  • Senior Reed Tubbs (Pflugerville, Texas) reached base on an error to lead off the fifth and scored on a sacrifice fly from John Dwyer (Northport, N.Y.) to make the score 2-0.
  • In the sixth, Soqui and junior Zev Moore (Jerusalem, Israel) supplied the offense with a pair of two-run home runs. Moore sent the first out to right to make the score 4-0 before Soqui added the second to stretch the MIT advantage to 6-0.
  • Senior Phillip Hood (Grapevine, Texas) entered in the seventh inning, working the final three innings of the contest to pick up his seventh save of the season. Wheaton got one run back in the eighth but Hood worked around a pair of doubles in the inning to wrap up the 6-1 win for the Engineers.

HOW IT HAPPENED - Game Two:

  • Wheaton scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning to take control of game two early.
  • The Lyons loaded the bases on the strength of two singles and a walk. Tommy Beauregard (Salem, Mass.) scored on an RBI walk to Timmy Wagner (Hingham, Mass.) after reaching on a lead off single. The Lyons then scored a pair of runs on an MIT error to jump ahead 3-0.
  • Dwyer cut the lead to 3-1 in the top of the second reaching on a fielder's choice that allowed CJ McCarthy (Pawling, N.Y.) after McCarthy had opened the inning with a lead off double.
  • Wheaton would go on to core runs in both the fourth and the fifth inning. Shawn Cali (East Taunton, Mass.) homered for the Lyons in the fourth and Wagner drove in a run with a single in the fifth.
  • Chase Rubin (Arlington, Va.) entered for MIT starter Cole Foster (Austin, Texas) after Foster went the first 4.2 innings. Rubin pitched 3.1 innings of scoreless relief, holding the Lyons back as MIT mounted a late rally.
  • Trailing 5-1, MIT posted a pair of runs to close the deficit to two in the top of the eighth inning. Dwyer opened the inning with a single before two quick outs set up first year John Spivey (Saint Louis, Mo.) with the bases loaded. Spivey deliver, lifting a single to center to score Dwyer. Zev Moore then drove home Spivey with a double to right.
  • Leading by two, Wheaton made the call to bullpen to end MIT's rally, bringing on senior Josh Fischer (Hopkinton, Mass.) to get the final out of the inning. Fischer worked the ninth to pick-up the save, giving up a lead off single to Tubbs before striking out the side to end the game.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Soqui's solo shot in the second was his third home run in as many games and the first time in his career he has homered in three consecutive games. His home run in the sixth gave him his first multi-home run game since he hit two at WPI on April 7 of last season.
  • Estrada improved to 5-0 with 59 strikeouts in 33 innings pitched.
