Men's Tennis Falls to No. 13 Babson, 4-1, in NEWMAC Championship

BABSON PARK, Mass. – The MIT men's tennis team fell in the NEWMAC Championship final to No. 13 Babson, 4-1, on Monday afternoon. The Engineers entered as the No. 2 seed while the Beavers held the top seed and captured the program's second NEWMAC Championship.  
 
THE BASICS:

  • Records: MIT (10-10 Overall), Babson (20-2) 

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • Babson grabbed the first doubles win of the day with a 6-2 win in No. 3 doubles and secured the doubles point with a 6-3 win in No. 1 doubles. Grad student Kailas Kahler (Pawtucket, R.I.) and sophomore Grant Gallagher (Irvine, Calif.) held a 5-3 lead in No. 2 doubles. 
  • Kahler and senior Ryan Xiao (Cary, N.C.) won their first sets in singles play with Kahler taking the opening set from Ole Lepsoe (Oslo, Norway), 6-3 in No. 1 singles. Xiao earned a 6-4 win in the opening set over Brady Anderson (Rochester, N.Y.) in No. 2 singles. Kahler went on to win the second set 6-2, while Xiao's match was halted with Anderson up 4-3.  
  • Babson swept courts 4-6 to earn the victory with Wesley Zhang (Staten Island, N.Y.) giving the Beavers the victory with a 7-5, 6-4 win in five singles.  
  • Sophomore Siddharth Marathe (Pune, India) dropped the first set in No. 3 singles, 6-1 but held a 5-2 lead when the match was concluded.
