Softball Splits NEWMAC Twinbill With Babson

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The MIT softball team rallied for an extra-inning win in game one but dropped game two to Babson in a NEWMAC doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon on Briggs Field.

    • Game 1: MIT 3, Babson 2 (8 innings)
    • Game 2: Babson 6, MIT 2
  • Records: MIT (11-5 Overall, 2-2 NEWMAC), Babson (11-6 3-3 NEWMAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME ONE:

  • Senior Mackenzie Bivin (San Diego, Calif.) hit a double to left with one out in the second, and junior Ava Ladd (Houston, Texas) followed with her own double to left to give the Engineers the early 1-0 lead in the second.
  • Babson responded in the next inning with a sacrifice fly from Athena Hadjipanayis (Rye, N.Y.) to tie the game.
  • Neither team could generate much offense against starters Moira O'Reilly (Columbus, Ohio) and junior Caroline Langmeyer (Upper Arlington, Ohio) in the middle innings.
  • Bivin and junior Olivia Scarpaci (Staten Island, N.Y.) singled in the bottom of the seventh, but O'Reilly left them stranded to send the game to extras.
  • A sacrifice fly gave Babson a 2-1 lead in the top of the eighth.
  • Senior Mikayla Cable (Valrico, Fla.) reached on a fielder's choice to plate sophomore Nicole Johnston (St. Charles, Ill.) with the tying run. A walk to sophomore Arianna Kumar (San Diego, Calif.) loaded the bases for senior Kennedy Adkison (San Jose, Calif.) who singled to right to score first-year Delaney Benevides (Plainville, Mass.) with the winning run.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Langmeyer improves to 5-1 with her complete game five-hitter. She allowed two runs (one earned) with three strikeouts and no walks. O'Reilly falls to 3-3 as she allowed three runs (two earned) on eight hits with three strikeouts and one walk.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME TWO:

  • Neither team could get a run across against starters Cameron Whiteford (Centerville, Md.) and senior Katie Katsuyama (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) until Babson scored in both the fifth and sixth innings to take a 2-0 lead.
  • With runners on second and third and one out, Bivin hit a fly ball to center to plate Cable and cut the Babson lead to one. Ladd then beat out an infield single to score Kumar and tie the game.
  • The Beavers then scored four runs in the seventh to secure the 6-2 win.
