Baseball’s NEWMAC Championship Run Comes To An End as MIT Falls to No. 11 Salve Regina in Extra Innings

NEWPORT, R.I. — Tyler Petrosino (Beverly, Mass.) hit a bases loaded walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the tenth inning to give Salve Regina a 6-5 victory over the MIT baseball team in the championship round of the 2025 NEWMAC Baseball Championship on Sunday at Reynolds Field. With the victory, Salve Regina claimed its first NEWMAC baseball title since joining the conference in 2023. The loss ended the season for the Engineers after a five-game run through the NEWMAC bracket that included wins over Babson, Wheaton and Coast Guard.

THE BASICS:

  • Score: Salve Regina 6, MIT 5 (10 inn.)
  • Records: Salve Regina (32-7 Overall), MIT (19-20 Overall)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Salve took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, scoring on a Shane Williams (Georgetown, Mass.) sacrifice fly after Christian Homa (Fairfield, Conn.) reached on a single and Evan O'Rourke (Arlington, Mass.) moved him to third with a double down the left field line.
  • MIT took the lead in the top of the second inning only to see Salve rally back in the home half to retake their early advantage.
  • The Engineers strung together three straight hits in the top of the second, as Zev Moore (Jerusalem, Israel) singled, Reed Tubbs (Pflugerville, Texas) doubled and Malachi Soqui (Castaic, Calif.) singled through the left side of the infield to score Moore. Tubbs came around to score on a sacrifice bunt RBI from Tyler Godfrey (Rowley, Mass.) to make the score 2-1 MIT.
  • Salve scored three runs on three hits in the bottom of the inning, stealing two bases as they went back ahead. Grady Schoops (Fairfield, Conn.) delivered an RBI single early in the inning while Homa had the big blast, hitting a two-run double to left center that made the score 4-2.
  • Salve held on to the 4-2 lead until the top of the fifth inning when Zev Moore hit a two-run home run to tie the game at 4-4.
  • MIT would take the lead in the next inning thanks to an RBI single from Owen Malone (Portsmouth, R.I.). Malone was the fifth man to bat in the inning, coming to the plate with two outs and Soqui on third. Malone drove in Soqui with a single to right to give MIT a 5-4 lead.
  • The Engineers continued to lead 5-4 until Salve scored on an infield single off the bat of Petrosino to tie the score at 5-5.
  • The game moved through the ninth inning still tied at 5-5. MIT had a runner on base in the top of the ninth inning and in the top of tenth but could not push across a run.
  • That set the stage for Petrosino in the bottom of the tenth. Shane Williams (Georgetown, Mass.) tripled to open the inning, forcing MIT to intentionally walk Wil McCarthy. (Pembroke, Mass.) and Matthew Neal (Ashland, Mass.) to create a force at any base. The next batter, Shea Donovan (Milton, Mass.) lined out for the first out of the inning but Petrosino followed with a single to center field, scoring Williams as the Salve dugout rushed the field in celebration.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • MIT grad student Teddy Schoenfeld (Boulder, Colo.) finished the game 3-for-5, and finished his MIT career with 336 career hits. His career total is now the MIT baseball program record.
  • Zev Moore's 10 home runs this season are a career-high.
  • Phillip Hood (Grapevine, Texas) took the loss for the Engineers, despite giving up just two runs in 4.1 innings after he had pitched 2.1 scoreless innings in MIT's win over Coast Guard on Saturday. Hood came up big for MIT in the NEWMAC tournament, appearing in relief in three of MIT's five games, giving up just three runs in 9.0 innings of work.
  • Reliever Andrew Wertz (Dover, N.H.) earned the win for Salve, pitching 1.1 innings of shutout relief. Wertz was one of five pitchers used by the Seahawks.
  • Sunday's game was the final game in the 22-year career of MIT Head Coach Andy Barlow. Barlow will retire as the all-time winningest coach in MIT baseball program history with an overall record of 421-321-3.
