No. 7 Women’s Tennis Falls to No. 8 Bowdoin, 4-0, in NCAA Regional Final

BRUNSWICK, Maine – No. 7 MIT fell to host No. 8 Bowdoin College, 4-0, in the regional final of the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championships on Sunday at the Pickard Tennis Courts.

  • Score: No. 8 Bowdoin 4, No. 7 MIT 0
  • Records: No. 7 MIT (17-3 Overall); No. 8 Bowdoin (17-5 Overall)
HOW IT HAPPENED - DOUBLES:
  • Senior Jay Lu (Austin, Texas) and first-year Chloe Zeng (Austin, Texas) raced out to a 5-1 lead before defeating first-year Bella Hartung (Oviedo, Fla.) and sophomore Zoe Sun (Sherborn, Mass.), 6-2, in the No. 2 position.
  • Juniors Alaina Kolli (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) and Artemis Pados (Delray Beach, Fla.) tied their match with sophomore Caroline Stuhlfaut (Duxbury, Mass.) and senior Jamilah Karah (Berkeley, Calif.) at 4-4, but the duo from Bowdoin picked up the next two games to claim the victory at the top spot.
  • Junior Cara Hung (Arcadia, Calif.) and first-year Suzanne Pogorelec (Chestnut Hill, Mass.) won the first three games of their match in the No. 3 slot, but sophomores Saina Deshpande (Pune, India) and Anastasia Samets (Ocean, N.J.) battled back to take a 5-4 lead. The Polar Bears responded by capturing the next three games which resulted in securing the doubles point.
HOW IT HAPPENED - SINGLES:
  • After falling to Sun, 6-1, in the first set, Samets retired at the No. 6 position.
  • In the No. 5 slot, Hartung battled Kolli for a 6-4 win in the first set. Trailing 5-3, Kolli knotted the second set at 5-5, however, Hartung won the next two games.
  • Pogorelec gradually established a 4-1 lead before topping Lu, 6-3, in the first set at No. 3 singles. The second set was a back-and-forth battle until Pogorelec rattled off three straight wins for a 6-3 final, which clinched the match.
  • In the top spot, first-year Fiona Lee (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) won the first three games against Hung. However, Hung picked up six of the next seven to secure the 6-4 come-from-behind victory. In the second set, Hung had a 5-3 lead when the match was halted.
  • Stuhlfaut raced out to a 5-0 advantage en route to a 6-3 result in the first set against Zeng in the No. 2 slot. In the second set, Zeng jumped out to a 4-1 lead which moved to 5-3 prior to the match being decided.
  • In the No. 4 position, Deshpande produced a 6-0 victory versus Karah in the first set. The second set was tightly played as Deshpande evened the score at 6-6.

  • MIT returns to action on Saturday, May 24 when Fiona Lee will compete in the first round of the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Singles Championship at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center in Claremont, Calif.
