Box Score CLAREMONT, Calif. – MIT first-year
Fiona Lee (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) advanced to the second round of the 2025 NCAA Division III Women's Singles Championships hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center but retired during the third set of her second-round match on Saturday. This was the fourth consecutive year the No. 7 Engineers made an appearance in the second round.
In the first round against senior Raine Weis (Ashland, Va.) of Christopher Newport, Lee won the first two games, but Weis gradually established a 5-3 advantage. Lee battled back to tie the set; however, Weis claimed the next two games to secure the 7-5 win. In the second set, Weis inched out to a 3-1 lead, but Lee won four consecutive games to go in front. Weis evened the frame at 4-4, however, Lee captured the last two games to force a third set. Lee carried the momentum into the final set as she produced a 6-0 result.
In the second round against senior Jimena Menendez (Miami, Fla.) of NYU, Lee defeated Menendez, 6-1, in the opening set. In the second set, Lee built a 5-1 advantage, but Menendez won five games in a row. Lee forced the tiebreaker; however, Menendez claimed the 8-6 victory. After trading games to start the third set, Menendez posted back-to-back victories before Lee retired with the score at 4-2 in favor of Menendez.
