Softball Uses Eight-Run Second to Defeat Ramapo, 8-1, in NCAA Regional Opening Round

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - The MIT softball team used an eight-run second inning to earn an 8-1 win over Ramapo in the NCAA Division III Softball Regional opening round, hosted by the top seed in the regional, Gettysburg College.

The Engineers, seeded third in the bracket, advanced to the winner's bracket to take on the Bullets while the second seed Roadrunners will take on John Jay.  
 
THE BASICS: 

  • Score: MIT 8, Ramapo 1 
  • Records: MIT (29-10 Overall), Ramapo (31-10) 

HOW IT HAPPENED:  

  • Ramapo loaded the bases with one out in the top of the first with two walks and an infield single. Senior Katie Katsuyama (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) then got an infield fly and a flyout to left to end the inning. 
  • Senior Mackenzie Bivin (San Diego, Calif.) led off the second with a single and back-to-back doubles from junior Arianna Kumar (San Diego, Calif.) and senior Kennedy Adkison (San Jose, Calif.) gave MIT a 2-0 lead. Three straight singles from first years Maggie Feng (Brookfield, Wis.), Delaney Benevides (Plainville, Mass.) and Layla Thiessen (Carlsbad, Calif.) increased the MIT lead to 5-0. Bivin, in her second at-bat of the inning, doubled home two more runs to make it 7-0, and Kumar singled home Bivin for the eighth run.  
  • Ysabellah Otero (New Milford, N.J.) doubled home the lone Roadrunner run of the game in the bottom of the third with two outs. Ramapo loaded the bases, but junior Caroline Langmeyer (Upper Arlington, Ohio) came in and got Lia Milsom (Roxbury, N.J.) to line out to Kumar at short to end the inning. 
  • Ramapo put runners on first and second with two outs in the sixth, but Langmeyer got Alex Hastings (Long Beach, N.Y.) swinging to end the inning.  
  • The Roadrunners got the leadoff batter on in the bottom of the seventh, but Langmeyer got the next three outs to secure the win.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • Langmeyer got the win (18-2) with 4.1 innings of work. She gave up two hits with one walk and six Ks. Katsuyama went the first 2.2 innings allowing one run on two hits with three strikeouts. 
  • Thiessen, Bivin, and Adkison all recorded two RBI in the game. Bivin and Adkison each had three hits in the game, as Adkison is now one hit shy of 200 in her career.  
  • Benevides and Kumar also recorded multi-hit games as the Engineers outhit the Roadrunners 13-4. 

UP NEXT: 

  • MIT will take on Gettysburg, tomorrow, Friday, March 16 at 12:00 PM. The winner of the game will advance to Saturday's Championship final while the loser will face an elimination game against the winner of Ramapo vs. John Jay at 4:30 PM.
