Baseball Rallies Past Clark for 8-6 Win on Senior Day

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The MIT baseball team closed out the NEWMAC regular season with an 8-6 senior day victory over Clark University on Saturday morning at Fran O'Brien Field. With the win, MIT locked up the third seed in next week's NEWMAC Baseball Championship and will host an opening round game on Wednesday afternoon.

THE BASICS:

  • Score: MIT 8, Clark 6
  • Records: MIT (16-18 Overall, 11-5 NEWMAC), Clark (25-13 Overall, 9-7 NEWMAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • MIT wasted no time opening up a lead as CJ McCarthy (Pawling, N.Y.) hit a three-run home run to right field after Teddy Schoenfeld (Boulder, Colo.) and first year John Spivey (Saint Louis, Mo.) both walked to start the game. The Engineers would go ahead 4-0 in the second thanks to an RBI single from Schoenfeld.
  • MIT opener Mason Estrada (Covington, La.) cruised through the first two innings without allowing a hit, striking out two, walking one and hitting one batter.
  • Clark rallied in the third inning, scoring four runs on two hits and one MIT error, ending the day for MIT reliever Cole Foster (Austin, Texas) after just a third of an inning. Senior Jimmy Moore (Los Gatos, Calif.) entered the contest and got a pair of outs to aid Foster and help MIT limit the damage, keeping the contest tied at 4-4.
  • Moore would pitch the next inning and a third, giving up a pair of runs in the fourth, as a Dom Mariani (Walpole, Mass.) single drove in the sixth Clark run, after the Cougars scored on an error earlier in the inning, to take a 6-4 lead.
  • MIT got one run back in the bottom of the fourth, closing the gap to 6-5 when Schoenfeld drove in his second run of the game with a sacrifice fly to left.
  • That set the stage for Phillip Hood (Grapevine, Texas), as the senior relief pitcher entered for Moore in the top of the fifth. Hood was outstanding over the next five innings, giving up just two hits and three walks while striking out four without giving up a run.
  • With Hood in control on the mound, MIT rallied in the seventh, retaking the lead with a three-run inning. Schoenfeld and Spivey set the table again, as Schoenfeld reached on a dropped third strike and Spivey walked. McCarthy tied the game with an RBI double down the left field line. The next batter, Zev Moore (Jerusalem, Israel) capped the rally by driving in McCarthy and Spivey to make the score 8-6.
  • That was all MIT would need as Hood worked around a walk in both the eight and ninth innings to retire the other three batters in each inning, ending the game with a strikeout of Clark catcher Anthony Locasto (New Rochelle, N.Y.).

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Schoenfeld finished the day 1-for-3 with a walk and a pair of RBIs. He is now four hits away from tying the MIT program record for career hits (227).
  • Zev Moore and McCarthy combined for five of MIT's seven hits on the day. Moore had three, including his two RBI double. McCarthy had a pair of hits, including his RBI double and the three-run home run in the first.
  • Clark starter Robbie Roth (New Providence, N.J.) went two innings, giving up four runs, all earned. He was followed by T. Flaherty (London, Eng.) who gave un one unearned over three strong innings of work. Michael Soares (Concord, Mass.) took the loss, giving up all three MIT runs in the seventh inning in just his second appearance of the season.
