Softball Rallies to Defeat Wheaton, 4-2, in NEWMAC Tournament First Round

NORTON, Mass. - The MIT softball team, the No. 1 seed in the NEWMAC Tournament, rallied from down 2-0 to defeat fifth-seed Wheaton College in the opening round, 4-2, on Wednesday afternoon on Clark Field.

Junior Caroline Langmeyer (Upper Arlington, Ohio) captured her 56th career win to set a new program record while also recording her 400th career strikeout while classmate Ava Ladd (Austin, Texas) recorded her 100th career hit. First year Delaney Benevides (Plainville, Mass.) also stole her 30th base to break the previous single-season record of 29.

THE BASICS:

  • Score: MIT 4, Wheaton 2
  • Records: MIT (26-10 Overall), Wheaton (26-14)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Wheaton jumped on top early with a homer by Peyton Blankenheim-Brown (Rio Linda, Calif.) over the leftfield wall to lead off the second. Back-to-back doubles gave the Lyons a 2-0 lead, but Langmeyer got the next two outs to end the inning.
  • The Engineers put runners on second and third in the first inning, and had first in third in the second, however Wheaton pitcher Sofia De La Rosa (Middle Village, N.Y.) kept MIT off the board.
  • With two outs in the fourth, first year Maggie Feng (Brookfield, Wis.) singled and stole second to get into scoring position for Benevides who lined a single to center and scored Feng. Benevides advanced to second on the throw home and scored on the ensuing single from classmate Layla Thiessen (Carlsbad, Calif.) to tie the game. Thiessen stole second and scored on an RBI single from Ladd to put MIT in the lead.
  • Wheaton looked to tie the game in the fifth, getting runners on second and third, but Langmeyer got Taylor Barry (Hadley, Mass.) swinging to end the inning.
  • Junior Arianna Kumar (San Diego, Calif.) doubled with one out in the fifth and advanced to third on an error on a sac bunt from senior Kennedy Adkison (San Jose, Calif.). Junior Olivia Scarpaci (Staten Island, N.Y.) then hit a deep fly ball to left to score Kumar and make it 4-2.
  • The Lyons put runners on first and second with two outs in the seventh, however Langmeyer got Blankenheim-Brown to pop up to Kumar at short to end the game.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Langmeyer improved to 15-2 with her 12th complete game of the season. She allowed two runs on five hits with three walks and four strikeouts. With her four strikeouts, she is just the fourth pitcher in program history to strike out 400 or more batters in their career.
  • Ladd and Benevides both went 3-3 with an RBI.
  • Feng finished 2-3 with a run scored.

UP NEXT:

  • The Engineers stay in the winner's bracket and will take on Babson at 4:00 PM tomorrow on Briggs Field.
