Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Drops 3-0 Match to Occidental

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The MIT men's soccer team dropped a 3-0 non-conference matchup to Occidental on Sunday afternoon on Roberts Field.  
 
THE BASICS: 

  • Score: Occidental 3, MIT 0 
  • Records: MIT (1-1 Overall, 0-0 NEWMAC), Occidental (1-1, 0-0 SCIAC) 

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • The Engineers had three shots turned away by Joseph Bassett early in the game. Chase Carroll and Woods Windham both had their shots saved within the opening minutes of the half while Keegan Harrison had his shot saved in the 16-minute mark. 
  • Occidental broke the scoreless tie when Alexander Yu lifted a pass to the front of the goal for Elijah Edelman who raced past the MIT defense and placed the ball into the goal at 18:24. 
  • The Tigers took advantage of an aggressive defensive play by the Engineers as Aiden Aley got the lose ball in front of an open net for his first goal of the season at 28:20.  
  • Charlie Miller looked to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead, but his shot was turned away by Charles Lai who came in front of an open goal to deflect the ball away. 
  • The Tigers got the third goal at 65:14 when Edelman sent a cross up in front of the goal where Ayden Rieke-Wey headed the ball into the net at 65:14. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • Bassett improves to 1-1 with five saves. Paolo Mangiafico made two saves and falls to 1-1. 
  • The Engineers earned seven corner kicks to Occidental's three. 

UP NEXT: 

  • The Engineers will head on the road to take on No. 15 Tufts on Wednesday, September 3 at 7:00 PM. The Tigers take on UMass Boston tomorrow, at 12:00 PM.
