No. 23 Field Hockey Defeats Union, 3-2, in Overtime

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Sierra Kim buried the game-winning goal 2:16 into overtime, helping No. 23 MIT defeat Union College, 3-2, in a back-and-forth non-conference field hockey game on Saturday at Jack Barry Field. Jane Tortorella produced a goal and an assist for the Engineers while Maddie Greco earned assists on both goals by the Garnet Chargers.

THE BASICS:
  • Score: No. 23 MIT 3, Union 2 (OT)
  • Records: No. 23 MIT (3-3 Overall); Union (3-3 Overall)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • After a scoreless first quarter, MIT broke through almost five minutes into the second quarter. During a penalty corner, Janie Thomas passed the ball to Meredith Wu on the far side who slipped it behind goalie Tess Parker. The pass made its way to Tortorella at the near post who quickly hit it into the cage.
  • Union evened the score less than two minutes later courtesy of a blast from Megan Dorsey at the top of the arc that was set up by Greco during a penalty corner.
  • The Engineers went up 2-1 with 2:46 remaining in the frame. Tortorella sent a pass into the arc where Sammi Blocher corralled the ball and flipped it over Parker's extended stick.
  • The score remained unchanged until the Garnet Chargers registered the tying goal with 9:16 remaining in regulation. During a penalty corner, Molly Holliday ended the stalemate when she scored on a pass from Greco as her shot from the far side made its way through traffic to the near post.
  • MIT had a chance to score two minutes later, but Parker turned away Bailey McIntyre's shot.
  • In the extra session, Kim collected the ball at the Engineers' attacking 25-yard line surrounded by defenders. She dribbled to the near side and put a shot to the far post which went between Parker's legs.

  • Maeve Zimmer made eight saves while Parker stopped five shots.
  • Union ended the day with advantages in shots (13-9), shots on goal (10-8), and penalty corners (7-2).
