Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Defeats No. 9 Amherst, 2-1, in Shootout

AMHERST, Mass. – Bailey McIntyre and Sierra Kim recorded the only goals in the shootout as MIT defeated No. 9 Amherst College, 2-1, in a non-conference field hockey game on Wednesday night. Meredith Wu scored the Engineers' goal in regulation while Maeve Zimmer made eight saves.

THE BASICS:
  • Score: MIT 2, No. 9 Amherst 1(SO, 2-0)
  • Records: MIT (5-3 Overall); No. 9 Amherst (3-3 Overall)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • On a penalty corner in the 13th minute, Drew Hussar's shot was saved but the rebound landed outside the arc where McIntyre passed the ball back to Hussar on the far side. Hussar then sent a shot that went past goalie Kate Grady and two defenders and was redirected by Wu at the near post.
  • Following a second quarter that saw Amherst produce a penalty corner and a shot on goal, the Mammoths tied the game in the 35th minute when Genevieve Caruso scored on the rebound of a saved shot.
  • The defensive battle returned in the fourth quarter as Zimmer thwarted Amherst's attempts on goal during the final minute of regulation.
  • McIntyre generated the lone shot on goal midway during the first overtime, but it was saved.
  • Early in the second extra session, Hussar broke up a scoring attempt in front of the cage. A few minutes later, Janie Thomas and Kim both had their shots turned away by Grady.
  • Going first in the shootout, McIntyre gave MIT the lead. Amherst could not convert their next four attempts and then Kim clinched the victory in the fifth round.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Zimmer finished with eight saves while Grady made four saves.
  • The Mammoths led the way in shots (14-5), shots on goal (9-5), and penalty corners.
